Just a quick note. On lift off engine one ingested at least one large bird and caused some blades to bend. Cowling etc intact. Dump fuel and divert to LAX. All put in hotels. Great inflight attendance and info. Big shudder when it happened. If any other AFF QF8 refugees are at the Marriott and want to grab a beer whilst we wait, let me know.

Update. Plane is having blades replaced on engine 1. Then wheels up at 22:00 to BNE then SYD. does anyone know I there is a way that I can get loaded onto the 380 direct to SYD? @redroo perhaps?? @qantascustomercare not responding to messages and dykwia with ff plat service centre is flat no

Best of luck for your flight home........these things happen. Good to read that QF handled it we'll.

Im glad everyone is ok. Would appreciate a trip report after this adventure.

Glad everyone is safe.

I would have thought QF would have tried to put PAX on other QF flights if they wanted to save on accommodation costs.

I'm no schedule expert.......by the time they landed at LAX all other flights to SYD/MEL would have left?

Moving over to A380 the next day is another thing.

Timing is the information that we don't have.

Valid point.

QF8 landed at 23:10. QF108 was still at gate. Considering they new two hours prior to it and the 380 departure they could have held them back. Apparently 108 was full. Will give a full trip report when I get back to SYD.

Captain of 8 showed me the pictures of the blades and I'm glad we didn't attempt the trans PAC flight, although they could have limped us to Tahiti instead if LAX. :-)

Probably more engineering staff in LAX than Tahiti.

I am sure they would have had all options on the table. Accom would have been the best considering. Were you in a need to get home ? If united was an option would you still have that urgency?

Tahiti then Fiji then AKL then SYD. ;-). Thinking of the status credits.

Given the SYD curfew, is the delay likely to be either 16 or 24 hours or is it an unknown at that stage? What local time (LAX) do you have to leave the Marriott?

Why would it be an issue with BNE being the first stop?

No point flying to Brisbane to just put people up for a night if they miss the SYD curfew... Latest is still stuck here but there was slots available in QF12 and 108 and 16 but they don't want to offload bags. :-|

Seeing first stop was originally BNE you'd think you'd have those people want to get home ASAP.

I just checked out of the Anaheim Hilton and ran into a work colleague hanging out in the lobby, waiting to see if he would make it to Aus tonight. They'd been told if there was no news from the engineer by 9pm, they wouldn't be leaving tonight.
Quite a few were bussed down to that hotel & there were at least 3-4 QF staff there attempting to provide updates to pax.

Someone from this forum was there & spoke to Mr Katie.
I heard someone ask about shuttles to LAX (at almost 7:30pm) & was told by the bell desk prior reservations are required. They had a certificate for $85 for any taxi, to guarantee to fare. That gentleman commented if QF weren't able to re-seat him on a flight tonight, he wuld attempt the VA flights.

(on a probably related note, Mr Katie and Little Miss's points upgrades for QF16 have not come through - both PS).

Big call to interrupt two or three other services to assist one. Time taken to offload baggage, sort which ones got the lucky call-up and working within crew (working hours) limitations - I'm not surprised they let the other birds fly.

Good luck with tonight - hope they get her going.

Hi @Katie - That was me :) he did say you'd be sure to be looking at this thread when you got online. Have a safe trip!

There were a few passengers looking a little distressed. It looked to me like QF were being optimistic but each time there was no good news passengers were a little more deflated.
