My FCO-PER-SYD flight is delayed due to mechanical problems. Now leaving 21 hours later.

I’ve been informed I am to submit a claim for incurred hotel and meal expenses. Has anyone been there, done that? What are the thresholds? call centre in Switzerland wasn’t able to prove me any indications.

You can also claim €600 EU261 compensation in addition to the accommodation and meal reimbursement. I claimed the UK261 equivalent compensation of £520 recently and they paid it very quickly.

Cool. same receipts for the two claims with QF?

There shouldn't be thresholds on things like meals or hotels if they don't provide you with vouchers. What I would say is that you should book something reasonable as in don't book the Ritz Carlton (unless that's the only hotel available). Book something modest and it would be very difficult for Qantas to refuse compensation. Similar thing for meals, don't buy bottles of Dom Perignon, but certainly you don't need to limit yourself to McDonald's happy meals either. I should think 20 or 30 euros per meal is not unreasonable per person.

In addition to all of that, EU261 also requires them to provide you with 600 Euros compensation for time lost due to this stuff up. Mechanical issues are something that European courts throughout the land have ruled are within the control of the airlines and so they are liable. Heck, pilots have died just before their scheduled flight and EU courts have ruled that the airline is still on the hook for compensation since staffing issues are foreseeable.
