Thanks markis.
Have put in for an upgrade from W to J on QF52 28th Jan so fingers crossed it comes through.
Opted for the last minute option too so could be exciting!

EF shows downstairs is pretty empty but upstairs is full almost so not sure at what level QF decide to offer the upgrades but surely its at this one!

economy class is sold out (oversold maybe), premium economy only has three seats left, and business class is looking wide open. Looks like there'll be plenty of op-ups as it is, so an upgrade request looks like a good chance.

Yes. Thats how I ended up with Premium Economy as it was the only way back.

Upgrade confirmed but they have swapped the aircraft for a 56 seater business.

Does this mean angle flat seats in J?
Seatguru seems to say that unless it has F class on the plane then its lie flat but I dont think that is correct?

The 56 seater business B747-400 (56J/40W/275Y) will have Skybed Mk I, i.e. angle flat seats.

Trust me to get an upgrade onto this...
Was originally a refurbed when I put in for it :(

Happens from time to time, looks like you have VH-OJA, suggest you tuck into the lounge food and try to get as much sleep as possible.

Slept very well!
After all the threads here on it I was not convinced I would but was pretty happy and definitely would take the upgrade again even if I knew it was MkI in advance.

Many people - I'm one of them - have no problem whatsoever in sleeping on Skybed I.

I also have little trouble sleeping on an angle flat, which includes TG J (older, most regional), OZ J (most except some newly fitted), SQ regional J and VA coast-to-coast J. You develop a technique after a while.

Indeed you do! My technique is to not recline the back of a Mk1 all the way, thus creating more of a cradle in which to lie. I have found this to be more comfortable and it prevents me sliding down the 9 degree slope :).

I cannot sleep well in a Mk1 Skybed. It is awful.
All relative mind you as the first time I travelled in it I slept like a baby. After experiencing considerably better options (Mk II, CX, BA and all the F seats) it seems pre-historic :!:

I can sleep on a plank in economy. Give me a Skybed in business any time.

Awful? Hyperbole much?

Whilst a Mk1 bed isn't the latest or greatest "bed in the sky", it's significantly better than what we had 10+ years ago, and there's far worse places to sleep (in an airplane or otherwise)

That's my opinion when I compare the Skybed Mk1 to what's currently out there in terms of J class seating.

My opinion is not based on either historical J class seating or other current non-premium class seating.
Call it hyperbole if you will.
