Hi All,

Currently booked MEL-SIN-LHR on QF35-QF1 for next month. Looking to potentially change that to QF37-QF1 to cut the layover time down significantly to 1hr 20m (that and the recent on-time performance of QF1 - I don't want a 5 hour layover to turn into 10!).

Having not been through SIN before, I am correct in assuming that the gates would be close enough together such that the actual transfer would be like 20 mins max?

TIA

20-25 mins walk would probably be worst case scenario from end of one pier to the end of the other. Could be and often is much closer than that.

QF37’s main reason for existing is to transfer passengers to QF1 ( and KLM to Amsterdam on QF codeshare), so wouldn’t be worried.

I've been on QF1 before from SYD-LHR when on one occasion QF37 was delayed by 4 hours leaving Melbourne due to a maintenance issue. They delayed the onward leg of QF1 until QF37 arrived so the transit passengers could make it, so I wouldn't be concerned with that transit time.

The last time I took QF37, the flight was delayed around 1.5 hours. On arrival into Singapore, they made an announcement about which flights all the (many) passengers with missed connections would be rebooked onto - most were the next evening. There were staff at the top of the airbridge to assist those passengers with hotels etc.

That said, this wouldn't be that common and you would probably make the connection most of the time, it's a very common one.

If I may, what reservation do you have at having a longer layover at Singapore? The reason I ask is Singapore is not a bad airport to transit at (not as great as LAX but that's a story for another day). They got a number of quality OneWorld lounges including Qantas, British Airways, Emirates and even Cathay Pacific if you've got the time. Certainly you'd have the time to sample these nice lounge offerings.

Yes you absolutely could cut it short by why risk having to run to your next gate and miss your connecting flight or have your checked baggage not transferred in time to the next flight?

As an aside, and something to think about for the return is trying to keep the connection at Singapore as short as possible. The reason being is any trips leaving the UK or Europe are subject to EU/UK261 compensation of 600 Euros should you arrive at your final destination more than 3 hours late. In other words if you have say just an hour layover at Singapore, but your flight out to Singapore gets delayed by 2 hours, you'll miss the connecting flight and likely be eligible for compensation when you get home. Food for thought!

That would be a rare outcome, and not something you could ever rely on. Is catching the jet out of Sydney an option?

Such a pity that service out of Melbourne was canned, just to make the Perth 787 look better.
