Hi,
Looking at the track taken by QF2129 GLT- SYD today it looks like a normal GLT- BNE one and then when overhead BNE, it took a sharp turn to the south-west. Is this the norm? Why wouldn't it just go directly via the inland?

Would that be going over Tamworth? My BNE-SYD flight on Monday night tracked that way.

Our resident ex ATC man will no doubt answer Was there any bad weather on route? GC map

Standard route for that flight is over Brisbane now. I believe it originally headed over Oakley inland however this was apparently causing conflict in the Brisbane area for reasons I'm not sure about and the route was changed. Been that way for about 6 months.

If you go to Skyvector.com and select World Hi you can get an idea of the "highways" in the sky, as there are no routes that allow for GLT to SYD, the aircraft joins the flow inbound to Brisbane overflies Brisbane then joins the normal southbound to Sydney. This is actually quite safe once the BNE bound descents are processed around the aircraft, and then the SYD bound climbers are also separated.

If the aircraft was given a direct track it would conflict with Brisbane arrivals from the north, arrivals and departures to the West before joining up with the Sydney flow. This would also put it straight through restricted area 639 which is annotated as YBR639 west of Amberley, which if active would not allow transits of civil aircraft as its under control of the RAAF ATC 452 Squadron. Growlers/Rhinos and Dash 8s are not good at sharing.

Thanks all for your replies. Interesting. So the " via BNE" route must add some kms and cost as it is less direct, but more straightforward ATC-wise.
