Recently I flew LA to Brisbane on the new Dreamliner that had just gone into service for this route.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good I felt after the nearly 14 hr flight. I regularly fly Qantas domestically and somewhat internationally and have usually had pretty good service. This was not so evident on this flight.

After climbing into my seat at LAX, I found a bottle of still water in the holder, for which I was grateful, as service for drinks was a long time coming ( 20 mins on tarmac then well after takeoff - at least 1/2 hr after takeoff ), which I found unusual given the other airlines I have flown over the last 2 years.. Emirates, Etihad, Air New Zealand, United, American Airlines, even British Airways all had pretty good service before takeoff in business.

The flight continued and a reasonable dinner was provided with a wine eventually. Sleep was pretty good, the seats were pretty comfortable and I was able to get around 5 hours sleep all up.

What was evident was the lack of visibility for cabin staff for the majority of the flight. I have since learned you need to be a button pusher to get any attention with QF staff. I am interested in the workload of cabin staff given the number of business seats and also premium economy seats on the 787. They seemed rushed when serving main course.

As mentioned on other forums, the Qantas Dreamliner seems to be lacking in restroom facilities for business class. One up the front and a couple down the back to service a large number of business and premium economy seats. The business class restrooms were also very utilitarian, without any styling unlike other airlines. There seems to be a general downplaying of business class in general.
I will be interested in how the other larger jets in the QF fleet will be treated in the future.

I did expect better from Qantas, but given the number of complaints on the web, I am not surprised. Unfortunately... But still better than a lot of smaller international airlines out there..

This was a reward flight, the only grumble was the exorbitant price for surcharges etc. They have the US - Aus flights sown up with virtually no access to American Airlines reward flights because of code sharing... I will have to be more creative next time..

Nice profile picture.
Did Ricky and Julian come on flight with you? I think Julian would drive some rum into himself in the lounge.

Hang on - I thought it was widely regarded as Mini-First class?

The dinner service was probably rushed because there's a fair bit of pressure on that flight to get the service done ASAP so the lights can be turned off so people can sleep. You'll find lots of complaints online from people who say the service on these late night departure flights takes too long and they need to be faster!
