Morning All,

Heading back to Perth 1st April BC on QF12, App saying 66k points for first upgrade. Just wanted opinions as never flown first and maybee only opportuity. Given its just a work trip and im heading home maybe I just save points for vacation.

1. Anyone flown fc think its a significant difference to bc? Heard Qantas first not as good as others.
2.is it a moot point, as a gold memeber unlikely to get upgrade anyway
3.woukd you spend points on buisness trips or just on vacation

Tha ks for your input

I personally wouldn’t. It’s an overnight flight and the service is not much different to J.

The bedding is better, however as it’s an overnight flight there is a basic supper menu and breakfast, both of which are not overly impressive.

These are kind of subjective and personal situation dependent ino.

If you're points rich, for example, it's a no brainer to apply (rememver no giarantee it will clear)
. However if you're saving points for some other purpose and this would be a significant part of your stash, then maybe not.

J on the 380 is just fine - all the flying ac have yhe current suites...

QF F is not a first tier product. It is not close to the likes of SQ, EK, EY or AF for example. It is though a ssuperior product to Biz on most airlines (bar QR perhaps)

Here is the thing though. You say it's potentially a once only oppo. So why not go for it?

The 12 is a longer night flight and sleep is where QF F suite comes into its own. The bed/bedding is brilliant and very comfy.

If you expect much better food than J.. then maybe not. It's mostly the same with a few extras. You don't fly QF F for Food imo.

Given the connection to PER and long night flight prior (and access to LAX Flounge) I think it may be worth it unless points are tight.

Btw it may :"only" be a work trip, but you're headed home where you probably will want max relaxation and maybe a lil indulgence too. I would do it.

Btw QF12 on 1APR24 looks wide open in.F right now, but your chances will still depend on status and others ahead of you in the queue.

It may be a work trip, but it's vacation from the moment you start heading for home (or it should treated as one).

I upgraded to First on SQ out of SIN once. Great experience, the service from the curb at Singapore to touchdown in Sydney was amazing. I'll never do it again though, it's not worth the points for me, and doing it just once makes it kind of more special.

If it was SQ first class - yes, but QF first class - I'd rather save the points for another business class trip.

At the very least, all of QF's A380s currently in service are now the refurbished business class seat, as VH-OQL has been transferred to AUH for presumably refurbishment - so there's now no chance of getting unlucky and getting the old horrible / dated business class seat.

66k points is almost another one way business class seat to Singapore (as an example).

I travel QF First when it’s the only points redemption option for Classic Rewards. I find it is reasonable value in that context. For example QF12 would be 144,000 points total for a Classic Reward. But 66,000 points when you already have already paid $000’s for a flatbed? There’s no day-spa at LAX QF First and others said, the food, wine and service is nothing special of QF First. The Champagne is much better usually - but the flight leaves late at night and lands in the morning, how much will you really drink?

Save your big upgrade for a day flight or better yet, a whole extra trip in Business. Flat beds can’t get any flatter just because its in a smaller cabin.

I wouldn’t…I normally have a great meal in LAX F lounge, grab a cheese plate and red wine then sleep till a couple hours out of Syd. Save your points for a better outright redemption assuming you’re emerald and above. If you’re not maybe do it to see the LAX F depending if you’re connecting and amount of time in LAX and F onboard… overall I’m in the no camp (save your points)

I’m in the yes camp providing you have a surfeit of points.
It’s a long flight and the bed/ comfort level for sleeping is worth it IMHO.

I wouldn’t say the same for QF2

I would add that, if you haven't done it before - and subject to the surfeit of points -, just do it to see what the fuss is (or isn't...) about.

At least that way, you aren't left wondering for the rest of your life. 🤔 ;)

I'm in the yes camp - it's always fun to try a new product that you haven't tried before. Besides, I would say that an overnight flight is the best case for trying QF F (vs. daytime flight where I'd much rather fly other carriers) - the bed is very good and is competitive or even better than other First Class products.

Do you have Platinum/Emerald such that you can access the First Class lounge on a Business ticket? If not, then that's even more reason to upgrade.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Having done QF11/12 in F in Nov, and J in March, I'd say do it for sure.
Massive difference in bed/comfort....maybe I'm just getting old haha, was difficult back in J.
Not too much difference in catering, but the space and comfort are well worth it, in my opinion...
And the Lounge is a bonus, the OW J lounge is a bit of a zoo at LAX

Ok , can someone check avaiabilty for me? Decided to cheap out on min bid now upgrade instead :) they told me I'll be making this trip often so bound to rack up enough for personal fc holiday
