Hi All

Just witnessed QF11 return to Sydney with full fire service escort after some sort of technical issue forced it to return maybe an hour or so into its flight to Los Angeles. Landing went ok, runway was inspected and cleared. Here are some pics I caught - you can probably guess my vantage point.

I'm not sure yet what the issue was.

I'm on QF11 about to try again. We were turned back 1 1/2 hours into the flight due to a problem with bleeding system. Apparently it potentially could cause depressurisation leading to the aircraft falling out of the sky. Problem now fixed, we're refilled and about to taxi off 5 hours late. I saw the fire tenders waiting for us as we landed. My only complaint is that that couldn't open the bar on board while we were sitting on the tarmac for the last hour or so.

I must be jinxed, this is the second international Qantas flight in a row that has been significantly delayed.

Got to go, we're starting to taxi

At the other end, QF12 has been on the Tarmac at LAX awaiting push back for the last 3 hours due to a technical issue.

That should probably be bleed air system. Also a depressurisation is very unlikely to cause the a/c to fall out of the sky.

I expect the fire trucks were in attendance because it would have been a very overweight landing, and the brakes could become very hot indeed. No reason otherwise...unless they just wanted to get out for a while.

The bleeding system is something the passengers are equipped with.

Thanks for the words of reason to all the chicken littles ;) :)

At the time I didnt know what the problem was as i missed hearing it on atc. They did in fact attach some sort of cooling device to the landing gear on arrival at the gate.

380s sure seem to be having a lot of tech faults and delays over past few months...
I guess it's all a part of introducing a big new plane. I've just finished reading QF32 (the book) and de Crespigny said that the 747 (-400) had heaps of problems when it was launched as well.

Great pictures!

is it my brain failing but the majority of the issues with the 380 are on the US route?

Have had a number of issues on the UK run seems to be evenly spread. Have seen a lot around the Air Conditioning System

Its over 7 years since the a380 first commercial flight. ..

I was on the A380 that blew the engine less than a week before. So rather close. And it's still my choice of plane wherever possible.

Anyone know if the 380 problems are unique to QF or are awe seeing similar issues with all airlines.

I suspect so but our international news service doesn't report on it
