Hi All,

I am flying QF11/12 in J later this month and submitted an upgrade request to F (I was lucky enough to be successful last year, so I thought I would try again this year!).

I noticed that now when requesting an upgrade there is an additional tick box indicating whether you wish to be considered for an upgrade right up to the gate, if they are unable to provide an upgrade prior to checkin. I ticked that box, but wanted to check whether there is any disadvantage (e.g. they upgrade people who didn't tick the box first, and if there's any space left over then they upgrade the people who did tick the "last-minute upgrade" box)? I was just a bit surprised that having that box ticked isn't the default option, although I guess some people may only want the upgrade if they know prior to checkin.

Thanks!

At the gate upgrades cannot be refused if granted, hence the need for a tick box.

I'm not aware of any difference between checking the box or not, except that if you do, and a seat opens up at the last moment (ie a no-show) you are in with an extra chance. And yes, some people would rather not be upgraded unless they know in advance. Perhaps they think missing out on extra baggage allowance and Flounge use (if you don't already have access), isn't worth the points.

I recently applied for F upgrade, and checked the box, and got my approval at T-60, so unless the cabin is virtually empty, the 'process one after the other' concept doesn't seem to apply :)

Based on my one experience this weekend I had ticked the box and got an sms message at around T-40 saying it was successful. I had been watching it and it was a full J cabin and about 9 free F seats. So it doesn't appear to stop you getting early approval.

Thanks everyone. In that case I'll definitely leave the box ticked, as I have no issues being upgraded right up to the gate if it maximises my chances.
