I'm hoping to meet some friends who happen to be passing through LAX the same day I am next month.

I'm on QF107 all the way through to JFK and they're arriving on QF15, and are changing to fly to Mexico from there. I've never been to TBIT before so I don't know what the layout is like.

I don't really plan to spend long with them, just a five minute hello in a hallway would be fine. I'll be in the J lounge after clearing immigration and re-checking luggage, but could I leave the lounge, head back to the gates (hopefully our two gates aren't far apart) and see them as they arrive off their flight? Or are we in different areas?

I don't know, but I would imagine their flight out of LAX is from a different Terminal and going land-side probably isn't an option for me I guess.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm ... my first thought is "Difficult"!

However, Mexicana use TBIT. Are your friends flying Mexicana?

If so you would do the immigration/customs thing, redeposit any bags and go though transit security and be in TBIT. So you would all be airside.

I wasn't sure so gave them a quick ring and asked - apprently they've now got a couple of days in LA and San Diego, so they'll be heading land-side.

Given the different manner in which American immigration process their pax (especially outbound) is it possible for me to watch my friends dismebark QF15 at their gate in much the same way we do here at domestic? Excuse the ignorance, I haven't been to the USA since I was a child.

Just like you, they will be shunted though immigration/customs, however with their stopover they will head landside after that.

If you think you have enough time you could head landside as well; meet them and head back in.

Methinks it may all be too tight! (Best possibility a meeting in the immigration queue should a flight be late enough)

Ah I see. Thanks for the information. I suspect this one may end up in the too hard basket then. New Zealand aside, I'm not the most experienced international traveller and don't really want to be stretching time-frames when I'm doing unfamiliar things in unfamiliar places!

When I have been on QF15 it has come into T4 not TBIT.Not far apart but enough to stymy your plans.

QF15/16 to/from BNE definitely go in and out of T4.

ISTR QF25/26 did the same but have they moved to TBIT?

See the link to qantas.com in post #7:
Tom Bradley International Terminal
Qantas operated non-stop flights to and from Sydney (QF11/QF12), Melbourne (QF93/94), New York (107/108) and arrivals from Brisbane and Auckland/Melbourne (QF25 and QF15) operate from this terminal.
To summarise:
  • All Qantas flights now arrive into TBIT,
  • QF16/QF26 depart from T4, &
  • QF108,QF107,QF94,QF12 depart from TBIT.

When did this change? Becasue we DEFINITELY ARRIVED on QF15 into T4. This was mid-September.

QF15 on 23 Oct this year arrived into T4, and was scheduled to do so.
Came back on the one day QF16 wasn't flying, so I came home via Sydney on QF108.

A colleague was on QF16 in September, and it left from TBIT. Maybe there's some changing each day, perhaps depending whether the A380 is arriving/leaving that day??

So we have QF15 into T4-

All QF arrivals are at the same terminal according to the LA Airport arrivals and departures, although I am intrigued by the following:

Departing from LAX?

Plan on being at the airport two hours before international flight and one and a half hour before domestic flight.

A QF 737-800????

LAX - Los Angeles International Airport. Flights, Parking, Airlines

On Tuesday the 1st of December a QF 747 arrived into T4 shortly after 7am and Tuesday the 10th of November & Wednesday the 18th of November there was also a QF 747 arrival into T4 (all these times I was in T4 or upstairs waiting for flights on my crazy little adventure over the past 3 weeks). Obviously I cant confirm if this was QF15 but it is due at 7am and I am not sure of any other flight which would conincide???

I last actually flew on QF15 on Friday the 28th of August and it also arrived into T4

According to Flightstats, no Qantas aircraft arrived anywhere other than TBIT.

Of course, that's what the records/schedules say, maybe not what happened at short notice due to circumstances.

Its quite possible the QF aircraft were moved to T4 for cleaning/preparation for departure by tug, rather than arriving under their own power with pax.
