Just got notification of flight cancellation 4 months in advance of direct flight QF105 MEL HNL. Any intel what’s happening here? Was an a330 schedule, so i assume finally run out of planes to maintain an existing published schedule?

Of course this will now require transfer thru Sydney on the day before. Only reason I booked this was because of direct flight. Really really difficult to like this airline. Haven’t flown qantas since burning points after covid (and platty). And I suggest to you, won’t be in the future.

Update, seat selection not available for HNL leg, so will have to call…. 🤯

And it would appear back to a330 for Sydney. I thought that was upgraded to 787 with introduction of MEL flight. Anyways just need to grip… only place is here….

HNL is moving to the AY A330s (dry lease).

It doesn't appear that the direct QF105 service is being dropped entirely.

It may be a frequency reduction. Looking at some random dates in April, it looks like it runs Tue/Thu/Sat

What day of the week was your flight?

It would appear it is being paused from Jan 31 to March 31.

I would assume it is due to aircraft availability issues, and obviously this route is low season during this time, low yield, first to get the chop.

Are you seeing the “Aisle / Window / No Preference” seat options? That usually means no available seats for one’s status level and number of PAX on the booking. As WP, it means it’s chokers but Row 1 is will be blocked.

Check Expert Flyer for available seats.

I’m booked on 103 in Feb and it’s the AY A330

Further update from me…..
yes, would appear all above is exactly what is happening. Seat reservation finally came up after 48 hours, and yes seat map is Finnair seat plan.
Looking forward to trying new Finnair seat, ironically already had Finnair booking for may next year, and that was going to be my first experience with it.
Missing the direct connection though….. melbournians no what it is like to be routed thru Sydney all the time. (Well I don’t, cause i always fly TG to BKK or SQ to SIN now!)

Route being dropped entirely now, citing soft demand- not really a surprise.

But SYD/HNL is increasing to daily, which is great. Good timing with HA flights becoming AS in April 26, and thus full oneworld connectivity to a range of US cities like LAS.

Still a reduction in capacity overall, I wonder if HA service will remain as is, load factors look pretty rubbish, circa 50%.

I believe SYD-HNL will drop back to 6x weekly from May 2026. The daily service is temporary.

What once was a very popular destination last decade has certainly fallen off a cliff. Some of those loads are pretty poor looking at other months also.

It’s become a very pricey destination now, with all the extra low cost capacity from Australia into Bali, Pacific and Asia, it seems like the traffic has moved elsewhere.

Will be interesting to see how other US destinations perform.

Not just for Aussies, but Japanese and Canadians are travelling elsewhere too. Seems quite a number of US tourist destinations have priced themselves out the market.
