QF1 Diverted to ATH

As per @Melburnian1's Qantas Cancellation & Delay Thread, they seem to stay overnight (maybe crew time-out?) which also impacts QF2 today (@gethsemene is already excited to file another UK261 claim).
I'm guessing this would absolve QF of all EU/UK261 compensation claims since passenger health is considered an extraordinary circumstance? Then again, I suppose one could argue that what difference does it make the cause of an inbound coming in late in the eyes of EU/UK261?

Hopefully the passengers get to enjoy the QF lounge at ATH. I hear the Souvlaki bar puts catering at other QF lounges to shame!

Saw this story pop up in my feed:

A Qantas representative was quoted as saying:

It will be interesting to see how QF recovers from the second diversion of that route in as many weeks. Would a simple refuelling be all that is necessary after off boarding the passenger?

Very different situation. Quite often (I don't mean to be harsh), it's offload the pax and just continue on to the destination.

Edit - I thought this was more real time that it is. Quite old news (>6 hours). Probably quickest for current crew to operate after crew rest.

Interesting that it diverted from over Bucharest to Athens. I presume closer airports such as OTP, SOF, and BUD wouldn't be capable of either handling the A380 or quickly and easily offloading a sick passenger from an A380? And some other reason (medical?) IST (300km closer), which does regularly handle A380's wouldn't be an option.

Yeah, that’s my understanding, that the extraordinary circumstances have to apply to the flight, not a previous flight. I suspect Qantas will feel differently…

OTP, SOF, and BUD
Correct for above
There are only 2 in that area that I'm aware of: IST and ATH

Of the 2, only IST sees a regular A380 service

There was a fog issue over the "Dardanelles" affecting transportation including Ferry and air travel over the new year weekend. At point of diversion, the time in IST was 0645am. There did not seem to be any delays at IST around the same time on 03Jan. IST is one of the busiest airports in the region,. While emergencies always take precedence, flying into congested airspace might have been a factor?

Apparently QF1 now scheduled to arrive tomorrow (Wednesday) at 3:40pm. Guessing they will use the airframe currently flying Syd-Lhr and scheduled to arrive at 5am tomorrow for my QF2 at 9:00am and then the ‘Athens’ airframe for tomorrow nights 8:40 QF2.

Must be rough on the crew to find out they’re doing a ‘day shift’ not a ‘night shift’ on short notice. I imagine they manage their sleep patterns carefully!

Got to Heathrow, two counters open marked ‘bag drop’, no premium queue, couldn’t drop bags obviously.

Staff as usual super helpful and sorted hotel, unfortunately Raddison Blu, but is what it is. Went to catch shuttle bus, next one in over an hour!

Going to be interesting to see queue for 5am shuttle bus tomorrow.

Will miss last HBA connection, so will need hotel in Syd as well.

For a medical diversion, you’ll be in contact with Medlink. They’ll make a call as to which port they’d like (and make arrangements on the ground), and as long as it’s suitable, the pilots will take it there.
Thanks for the name of the firm, very interesting operation they run!

Thank you for this - great information.

What is wrong with Radisson Blue Edwardian Heathrow Hotel?

It has a '4/5' rating on TA (TripAdvisor) and while some comments suggest it's 'dated', others praise it fulsomely.

As usual when disruptions occur, airlines love to put you on buses too early. No need to have it depart the hotel at 0500 for a proposed 0900 flight that has little chance of departing at that time. Why not if you have an Oyster card or credit card, just catch the 0613 hours public route 105 Transport for London bus from Mondial Way 200 metres from your hotel to Heathrow's bus station from where it's well under a 10 minute walk to T3?

As predicted the bus Qantas provided (Hotel Hoppa) was no where near big enough at 5am, probably half the people there didn’t get on, as you had suggested, I took the alternative of sorting my own way there!

Raddison Blu is ok I suppose, but it has a wing which I reckon they ONLY use for delayed planes, my room was tiny (literally struggled to get two suitcases in) and not especially well cleaned. Food provided was a buffet which wasn’t especially appetising, but definitely edible.

At airport now, in BA F lounge as Qantas lounge currently shut, they’re planning on opening at 6:30am.

Still showing 09:00 departure on boards in airport and 09:25 on my boarding pass…

For those playing along at home, they’ve called us all to the gate, still showing leaving at 9am and boarding at 8:25. Polite fiction as it’s now 8:30 and there is no sign of us going anywhere anytime soon.

Presumably a medical answer to that. For whatever reason, they considered Athens offered something that Istanbul didn’t. In the days before Medlink, I once had a passenger who was in extremis, and the advice from the RFDS was to take them to Adelaide, even though Darwin was far closer. Basically, if they’d survived getting to Darwin, the RFDS would have had to fly them to Adelaide immediately, as the treatment they needed didn’t exist in NT, and they were already on a much faster aircraft that was already pointed roughly south.

Once the aircraft diverted, it would have become subject to Eurocontrol slots, so a delay getting airborne again is guaranteed. I went to Amsterdam one morning, and after getting fuel, when we asked for a clearance we were told that the next slot wasn’t until around 6 hours away. We had nowhere near enough duty hours available for that, so following the advice of some very helpful ATCs, we started anyway, and got a clearance to taxi to a spot out of the way, but near, the duty runway. The hope was that someone else would miss their slot to London, and that we’d be in a position to grab it. And as luck would have it, we didn’t even have to stop on our taxi out.
