QF Weighing Carry On

greenfrog86,

Who are you flying with :?:

I'm on Qantas for the International part, and then AA codes share, internals with AA and United...

From what people have said, I should be right on the internals with my carry-on wheels etc?

Thanks for the help!

greenfrog86, you should be ok with what your planning on bringing... Oftan they won't include small things such as laptop bags in your carry on allowance. (It kinda depends on the FA you have on the day)

Technically the rule is one carry on item and a small personal item (eg camera, handbag, or laptop bag).

What I usually do is I carry my laptop in my wheely bag (it's got a small compartment for a laptop), as well as a few other items that I will need for the flight (or I would miss if they didn't arrive at the destination), such as a book \ ipod \ coat or jumper \ deodorant \ and sometime a change of clothes. It works quite nicely as I rarely go over the 7kg mark, and it also means that hanging around airports I only have one bag to worry about.

My hand luggage was also weighed at Bne International back in July. There is a guy sitting at the top of the escalators before you go down through customs. My roller bag was over 7kg, so all I had to do was remove a few kilos and transfer it to another carrybag I had with me. Very strange - I still have the same amount of hand luggage with me just distributed in 2 places. Of course, when I had passed through customs, I simply repacked everything back into my roller bag.

Not sure what the point of all that is - however he did ask who I was flying with, which was QF J. Maybe my flying class made the difference between being sent back to check in more luggage and being allowed to proceed.

At MEL Intl this evening, the man inside the imigration control area weigh my two carry-ons one was 8kg, the other 9.2Kg - he told me to go back to the QF checkin counter and get them to weigh it - he said they have the discretion to carry heavier bags if they want to - I just needed a QF tag to say so.

Off I went back to the F check-in, who were aghast that I had been asked to come back and weigh my bags. They told me that QF is ok with up to 10 Kg even though the official limit is 7Kg. They also told me to make sure I showed them my express card (I am travelling in whY) presumably greater leniency is shown then - certainly the case when travelling in J (never had any problems when in J in the past) - the F checkin staff even offered to walk me though to airside if I still had problems.

So my qwuestion is: who is employing these "bag monitors"? Why would the airport pay for this (as they dont care how much carryon passengers carry), and if QF are paying (or any other airline), they should be identified as working for sauid airline.

Can anyone shed any light on who is enforcing this as it's just crazy.

the rules are the ruless really, and if they (whoever) starts actively enforcing it .. then by all means, fantastic.

there will be winners all round - and the losers, are those passengers who choose to ignore those designated rules.

Absolutely; always approach the door guardians with your Express card fanned with your BP so the Express card can clearly be seen.

By doing this you get sent to the left where there is no weighing station. (Note there are renovations currently in progress and all go to the right - however until these are complete, still show your express card and you should be waved though.)

I've had hand luggage weighted at check for both domestic and international travel - but only when travelling with the family. In these cases, I think we've probably had 8 times between 4 or us and it has been a matter of weighting only 1 or 2 of the items, but not the heaviest item.

The international door monitors have also been around for a long time. I remember trouble with one of them back in 1993 or 94 at BNE.

I believe the carry-on weight checkers are airport employees and are undertaking the checks before people go past the "point of no return" after which it is a pain for airport, immigration etc if people have to return back to checlk-in counters to check bags they wanted to carry on but exceed the weight/size limits. They should be aware of the various airline's policies, including any variations for status or premium cabin passengers, and are trying to minimise issues after passengers have already passed through immigration.

And note the issue is the max weight of each piece of carry-on luggage and not anything to do with the total weight of carry-on the passenger has. Some with two pieces, one weighing 13kg and one weighing 1kg may have 14kg total. However, the 13kg piece may cause serious injury if unrestrained in the cabin or falling from an overhead locker. Carry-on weight limits are about passenger safety and not about fuel consumption.

I have never had carry-on weighed.

Watched a few flights board on various gates as I had time to spare. QF Dragons were weighing anyone who had carry on suitcases.
Remember that what is on your person does not count as part of carry-on allowance.

Is this new? Or a sign of tight stinginess to charge PAX more?
Probably trying to get more out of passengers.

Maybe we'll see passengers being weighed soon??
Please don't give them ideas....

At Brisbane International there were two people weighing all wheeled carry-on bags. Mine was 8.15kg and was waived through without concern. I was travelling QF economy.
