Here is my comparison with QF and VA using J transcon.

I have been a loyal VA flyer for the 10 or so years and decided to give QF a try to see if the grass was greener over the other side.

Flights:

QF575 - 9th May 2017 Syd to Perth

VA556 - 22nd May 2017 Perth to Syd

Both flights were using points plus pay.

QF - 36,000 points + $40.07

VA - 38,200 points + $17.55

Check in:

QF: Having not been to the QF terminal for a long time it took a couple of minutes to find the check in counter. No line straight up to check in agent and was all done in a minute or two. One thing I did notice was there was no mention of lounge access or where it was located. As I am a red member I would have though this would have been mentioned.

VA: Straight up to priority check in and was all over in a minute or two. As I am now Silver with VA I was told that I could use the Lounge and was given instructions as to where it was. To finish the check in agent said "Enjoy your flight Mr Mogul".

Lounges:

QF: After having located the business lounge in I went. First impressions were it was rather busy but it was still easy to find a seat. Food on offer was far superior to what VA offer. Yes I know this was the business lounge but this is what is on offer for J pax. I found overall the lounge needed a freshen up with paint peeling off the walls in places and the toilets were definately not up to standard with the cupboards falling apart and paint missing off the walls.

VA: Lounge was just about empty with only 5 or 6 other people in it, although it did become busier towards the end. Food was normal VA stuff with nothing special. Overall the appearance of the lounge and the lounge toilets was far superior to QF. Keep in mind this lounge is in the new terminal so I wouldn't expect anything less.

Boarding:

QF: Priority boarding and normal boarding lanes clearly marked. Boarding didn't commence until 5 mins before departure was scheduled as a result both the priority lanes and normal lanes both had large que's of pax waiting to board. Once boarding commenced I was seated in a matter of minutes.

VA: Once boarding was called a couple of pax went to priority boarding who were not entitled to it and sent back to the end of the que. Apart from that no lines and straight on.

ON Board:

QF: Found my seat 5K sat down and started exploring the seat and all it's little pockets. It wasn't until pushback the any crew member came near me, I was offered a very quick juice or water and that was it, no introduction no nothing.

A short time after take off meal and drink orders were taken. A little while later the dreaded cart arrived with breakfast, it was at this point that my first real interaction with the crew took place. The CSM introduced himself and served breakfast. To be honest the breakfast was more than underwhelming it was disgraceful, I had the omlette which literally just an omlette no garnish no sauce no nothing. I was offered a couple bits of sourdough and that was breakfast.

The seat had plenty of room and more legroom than VA in the fully flat position which I preferred. As the storage area was next to window I felt a little too close to the aisle especially when the cart was there. The seat felt harder than VA's which I found a little more comfortable overall.

J cabin was full for this flight.

VA: Sat in 3K. Crew member come up straight away and introduced themselves and asked if I had flown J with VA before and offered to go through seat, TV, etc operation. Pre departure drink order taken as well.

After take off CSM come around and introduced themselves while handing out hot towels. A short time later newspapers were offered.

Lunch orders were taken shortly after with a full 3 course meal provided. The main difference here apart from the quality of the food was the almost like personal butler service that VA does very well. No cart to been seen all food hand delivered on a tray with proper salt and pepper shakers.

As I said before I find VA seat's very comfortable except for the legroom in fully flat mode, QF's definately have a lot more foot room. VA's angled seat also tends to feels a bit more personal than QF's.

QF arrived about hour an hour late into Perth and VA was about 15 mins early no biggy in the scheme of things.

My opinion is that there is very difference in the overall hard product offered by both QF and VA and would be happy to fly either again in the future. The big difference for me was the soft product was definately a lot better on VA.

In the end we the consumer are the winners as both airlines offer a fantastic J product on the transcon route, will this continue with VA putting some of there A330's on the Hong Kong route only time will tell.

Seems a pretty fair comparison, thanks. What were the respective aircraft?

I'd agree that we are lucky to have both major airlines offering an overall great J transcon product. Contrast with 'Eurobusiness' and the US products (also thinking of lounge access).

Another vote of agreement.
I think "the dreaded cart" is the main problem with the QF soft product.
For up to 45 minutes after take off the crew fuss around preparing the trolleys and only after that do they venture out to encounter passengers.
It can be a long time before your first drink!
Whereas on VA they are passenger focused from the get-go.
I think the cart is past its use-by date.

Very fair comparison and completely accords with my experiences. The only thing I'd note is that breakfast of course can't compete with a 3 course meal - but it should be much better than just an omelette.

Sadly I reckon the dreaded cart remains for exactly the reasons noted above. It slows everything down, and saves money. Which is understandable on a 5 hour flight from the East coast to Perth. But I've been on a few A330s between SYD and MEL where the last J pax gets served the meal after descent has commenced. Just ridiculous.

To be fair to QF I've had some great crews who have taken food and beverage orders before or immediately upon takeoff. So it is a bit crew dependent, but more consistently good on VA in my experience.

May I add similar comparison flights? Not exactly a direct comparison as it was ADL-PER on VA and B737 and PER-MEL on QF and A330, both in business. I am WP on Qantas, NobodyRed on Virgin.

The VA flight. VA713 dep ADL 6:30am

Brief time in the ADL lounge due to the early hour; had done on-line check-in and HLO. Orderly priority boarding. Very warmly welcomed on board and then greeted by name at my seat by the CSM. A 'standard' J seat (ie not transcon type) but perfectly adequate for the 3-odd hours to Perth. Newspaper and juice offered, and accepted. After seat belt light went out, crew immediately started preparing breakfast.

Breakfast service very odd. Cabin was 2 rows of 2-2, and there was a pax was at each window seat. Pax 1A had very warm chatty greeting, order taken and then prepared, then served. FA went back and then brought out breads. Went back and then brought out coffee. Then pax 1F had order taken. I assumed 1A must be WP to have exclusive service up front, but the process was repeated with everyone. 1F had order taken, prepared, brought out, then breads brought out, then coffee. Me, in 2A, was third and didn't get a look in until 3/4 hour after seat belt sign off; I was really slavering by this time with the smell of brekkie from the galley and the guy in front obviously enjoying his. Individual plating of meals is good, but surely it would be better to make some contact with each of the 4 pax first, take orders, and then deliver?

All the service when delivered was impeccable, and a bit formal, which I didn't mind. Meal was good without being outstanding. FAs disappeared during the middle hour of the flight.

On descent, I asked if there was time for a coffee after I saw one being delivered to another J pax. It wasn't delivered for 15 mins (I don't know what the FA was doing in the meantime - meal service was long cleared away) and by that time we were quite close to landing; the coffee was brought out in a paper cup due to proximity of landing. I didn't mind that, but what was off was that was the last I saw of the FA. They got seated for landing, we were strapped in and we landed with me holding half a cup of coffee, which was a first for me.

Overall: I enjoyed the flight; hard product was adequate for the flight. Service was uneven. When there was contact with the FAs, it was very good. However I don't know why they disappeared for long periods; in my experience with VA business on HBA-MEL, this was unusual. I suspect that the FA in the J cabin was somewhat inexperienced.

The Qantas flight. QF476 dep PER 12:55
Again, on-line check-in and HLO. Spent 90 mins in the Perth J lounge - first time there and very impressed. Priority boarding totally chaotic. Standard peering at BP and then 'Hello Mr Rooflyer' on boarding, but no other greeting after that. Seat is the gorgeous 'new' (for me, anyway) A330 J seat which lived up to expectations but had some issues (later).

Announcement to the J cabin by CSM - using loud voice, not the PA system - that there was a problem with the IFE. Only some programs will show on the IFE; others are viewable by Q streaming and devices were available to those who didn't bring their own. Then several seats required adjustment by CSM as they couldn't get 'a green light'. Safety video wouldn't show, so done manually by single FA in the J cabin, on the other side, front. Hardly visible.

After take-off, my lunch order was taken out of order in the cabin; FA said that they wanted to make sure I got my first preference - WP recognition I suppose, but it wasn't specifically stated; good stuff. Drinks order to be taken later.

Lunch was very nice but drinks eventually arrived after meal mostly finished. Drinks topped up regularly after that.

The CSM I would describe as 'folksy' and for me it didn't work - but maybe the Perth flight likes that. He also seemed a bit flustered at times; maybe there was more going on than was apparent and he was distracted.

For landing, I decided to try the semi-recline mode. I was looking out the window on descent and to my surprise, without saying anything, the CSM reached in and started adjusting my seat. I asked if it was OK to have the seat in the landing recline mode and he simply said 'Gotta have a green light'. OK - just tell me that and I can adjust my own seat, thank-you. Seemed a couple of seats around me had similar problems.

Overall. These were my first flights into and out of Perth in many years and I'm not sure how typical my experiences were and the flights weren't strictly comparable.

After-lounge, pre take-off experience was much better on VA. The Virgin J FA/CSM was quite formal in in-flight service and pax recognition but I think not very experienced in the role as the breakfast service was very slow. The Qantas CSM was the opposite - quite folksy and gave the air that he'd done it a million times and just adjusted my seat when he wanted to. Breakfast on VA and lunch on QF were both good. Both cabins were suitable for the flight taken; the QF A330 J was good, but there were a number of issues on my flight.

I'd again reflect Mogul's comment that we are lucky to have two high quality choices for our J flights. Neither of mine were the best exhibitions I suspect, but both better than most equivalent domestic flights overseas.

Could have been staff travelling - they would be served last, and experienced crew would never state why you were served before them.

VA staff don't get Business domestically. I've been in 2A with 1ACDF and 2DF occupied, and I had order taken/served last on a SYD-BNE. Would have been ok but 1AC each took two meals so I got a sandwhich from the Y menu.

Two meals each is pretty rude - from both the pax and the FA allowing it.

The quote from Rooflyer's post on which I was commenting was taken from his review of the QF flight.
I'm aware VA staff can only fly in Y on domestic flights. However I am also aware that QF staff can book into J (or more precisely book a ticket which is eligible for a "space available" upgrade).
