This NOT going to be a Qantas versus Virgin thread - I'm not looking for a "fight"

When I read AFF I call up the latest postings and scroll down to see if there has been anything posted in the last 24 hours that may be of interest. Credit cards don't interest me, rental cars don't interest me etc. etc. So I'm looking for a thread title that may be of interest that I can read and subscribe to.

Two threads today have prompted me to finally write this message.

"30% off reward seats"
"New Bris Platinum Lounge and Valet"

Both of these are about Virgin - and I have no problems with that, except that I have no interest in anything Virgin. I"M NOT LOOKING FOR A FIGHT - OK? I'm Qantas Life time Gold. I've been with Qantas since it was TAA. MY FF# has four digits that aren't zero's.

SUGGESTION: How about we put something in the thread title that identifies it as QF or DJ. Now, some 5 (?) years ago it wasn't necessary. The Club was the QP, Platinum was WP etc. etc., but not now - and that's fine. Virgin has done a tremendous job at getting itself credibility within this community. It's just that I have no desire to read anything about DJ (I'M NOT LOOKING FOR A FIGHT!) it's just that I'm an avowed Qantasaphile.

Just a simple "Q" or "V" may be the answer????

Just a suggestion for what it's worth.

On the right hand side of the new posts page it tells you what forum its in, Virgin or Qantas.

It doesn't get much easier than that?

Rather than hitting the "What's New" link why not go to "Discussion Boards" then "Qantas Frequent Flyer"......

You could even bookmark the page...

:p

Also given your self-confessed Qantophilia, I would definetely recommend broadening your horizons (not just Virgin but all the myriad of international carriers out there) given the current trend for the Red Roo continuing to shrink into the Red & Orange Joey. ;) :)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I understand your issue, but I recommend you get into the habit of checking out the host forum for the thread like I have.

Really that's the way vbulletin was designed.

If a policy was introduced to put DJ or QF in every thread title it would result in clutter.

AFF has grown immensely over the last year or two and adaptation is the way to continue to get the best of of the forum.

I'm not lifetime gold and I joined well after TAA when the way of the dodo, and my number also has four digits that aren't zeros. :p :D

In keeping with your desire not to arouse heated exchange, it'd be really lovely to be able to filter out such discussion or push it on to a dedicated forum so that users who are looking to discuss news directly related to FFs / routings / travel options without things turning into political or 'religious' wars (QF vs DJ; haves vs have nots). Facts are facts, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there's simply no need for the lack of civility that goes around at times.

Any constructive suggestions? I do really love this site, yet I find myself increasingly put off by the amount of posturing and chest-beating that goes on. I'd more than happily stick to one of the areas that avoided that kind of thing (just as Ikara could easily avoid DJ topics by staying in the QF forum), but I can appreciate that it's a lot to ask - nevertheless, I'd be negligent in not asking the question. One can dream though.

As many people said, you can just read the (sub-)forum name on the right hand side and it'll tell you whether it's "Qantas Frequent Flyer" or otherwise. You can even subscribe to a forum so that when new or changed threads appear, you get an email to this effect (might save you reading "New Posts", but you'll miss out on other forums).

Of course, not every Qantas thread is necessarily in "Qantas Frequent Flyer", but most pertinent ones are. It's pot luck if it ends up in "Travel News", "Open Discussion" or "Your Questions", but then sometimes it's about both Qantas and Virgin, and you can't escape that.

What would be nice is if the @AustFreqFly Twitter feed which gives us new topics was auto-tagged to show which forum a new topic was created in, for example #qantas, #virgin, #open, #yourQs, #tripreport and so on. Right now, every post is auto-tagged as #qantas and #virgin, which is obviously done to garner side traffic, but it's not very useful and almost goes against the good use of tags.

However, I don't think there's any need to explicitly label topics "Q:" or "V:", because for most part the separation is OK and easily discernible from the New Posts list.

I think this isn't possible unless very, very strict forum rules were enforced by the Moderators.

The problem is that it "feels" "political" or "religious" when it can get downright dirty and dangerous. PC vs Mac is a similar battlefield. But by the time you want to create the 'ideal' discussion environment you're alluding to, you pretty much need to strip out emotions, or ban them. This is nigh impossible.

I'm not saying that lack of civility is something we should tolerate, but it is very difficult to achieve otherwise.

A lot of the problems I see with people resulting in chest-beating or posturing is usually a lack of adequate communication. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but everyone else is entitled to challenge your opinion (as well as agree, as necessary). The challenging of an opinion is not the same as someone saying you have no right to an opinion. An opinion may carry a fact but it may also carry a fallacy. If facts are facts, then people should stand to have fallacies pointed out and corrected. (No one should tolerate an opinion which is completely founded on lies or false information - that's a true abuse of the right to an opinion). People will understand an opinion based on its language and content. If you use very strong words in an opinion without backup, you should expect people to rationally question why you hold such a strong opinion. If that is viewed as an attack, why?

That is the main sources of contention I see. Some of the others are usually segues, which perhaps the Moderators have taken a softer stance on (unless the segue is truly off topic or starts to create a thread in itself).

Having said all that, I do share the concern with you that it is a shame that we have to have arguments about the approach rather than just the content, but both are important, especially since this forum affords us a degree of confidentiality and the disadvantage of no face-to-face interaction (where the full understanding of one's argument may be more achievable).

I recommend subscribing to the Travel News and Qantas Frequent Flyer sub-forums - that way you'll get a nice spread of information without seeing the stuff you don't want to see.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys and gals. I didn't think of the use of the sub-forums (obviously). I've just always logged in and hit "New Posts". I need to be more selective and will get myself organised to do so.
Thanks again all.

Mods - suggest closing this thread. It's served it's purpose and can now go away.

Cheers

I just looked at the page that I've been logging into for atleast 6 years and don't I feel like a dork. Everything I wanted is already there. Duh. It's amazing what you can see when you actually look! That's what happens when you retire.
