QF to defer A380/738 and slash 1750 jobs

When will we know what routes are going?

Airlines are quick to advertise new routes but ones that go just disappear from the timetable!
The announcements suggest the scheduled changes will not mean routes going, but reduced frequency on current routes. It mentions to the USA, Europe and South Africa, as well as some domestic routes.

ACTU wants talks with Qantas

a related story from news.com.au:

ACTU secretary Jeff Lawrence wants to sit down with Qantas management as soon as possible in an effort to minimise job losses at the airline.

"Qantas has a skills base that is essential to the Australian industry and that needs to be preserved," Mr Lawrence said.

"Qantas has been frank about its intentions and current position and needs to be open with the unions."

For the pacific, perhaps some of the SYD-LAX routes will go.

MEL, AKL and BRIS to LAX are all once per day so not much room to cut there.

Does anyone know whether BA routes SYD-LHR are being cut back?

I would presume it must be HKG or BKK Kangaroo routes since the SIN ones seem to be holding up really well and are consistantly more or less full even mid week.
E
HKG seems to be ok.. for at least economy.. Today is my second midweek trip to HKG in as many weeks and have been upgraded to PE again. Economy was full on the last flight so I assume the same is true today.. Although it is school holidays..

SYD-LAX always seems well patronised when I am flying (At least in whY), can't see them cutting back there.

According to Austraian Aviation Express Issue 265 (email) received yesterday:

Australian Aviation said:
Qantas says it plans to cut frequencies on key domestic high frequency routes, but will not pull out completely from any markets, nor will it transfer any more routes from Qantas mainline to Jetstar in the short term. Internationally, the cuts will come on frequencies to London, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Johannesburg.

Julia Gillard says Qantas job cuts show global financial crisis hitting Australia har

from news.com.au:

QANTAS' decision to axe up to 1750 jobs showed how the global recession was hitting Australia, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard says.

Ms Gillard said Qantas had acknowledged a huge and unprecedented downturn in international travel as a result of the global financial crisis.

She said slowdowns in key destinations such as China were all going to feed into a market like international travel.

Qantas chief Alan Joyce says Qantas job cuts 'won't affect safety'

from news.com.au:

QANTAS chief executive Alan Joyce says safety at the airline will not be jeopardised despite plans which will affect up to 1750 jobs.

Australia's national carrier yesterday announced plans for another round of job cuts on top of 1500 last year as a result of a dramatic collapse in international travel because of the global financial crisis.

Despite the cuts, Mr Joyce assured safety at the airline would not be jeopardised.

Well, you'd expect BNE-LAX will go back to 5/wk, same for JNB and some of the non-SYD-HKG flights may pare back to 5/wk.

Surprised they'll cut back LON flights (maybe only go ex-HKG 5/wk).

Will be interesting to see the cuts - I'm somewhat surprised they havent announced what they will be 9more specificially) - the quoted routes are pretty generic.

I guess since HKG and LHR was mentioned it must be a HKG route that is going to get decreased.
:(

JNB must have really crashed since you used not ever to be able to get a premium seat almost on those flights.

The LAX cuts i think was expected given the cut prices to fill a plane with all the new competition.

Agree with those comments on the JNB flights, we had a few consultants from JNB working with us on and off over a period of 3 months and quite often they had to slum it in whY even though our travel policy was J. They simply could not get seats at short'ish notice.

I think HKG has already been cut towards the end of last year???

With VA now in the air, QF's ability to gouge customers flying between Australia and the USA is now severely limited. They get no sympathy from me. They made plenty of hay while the sun shined. :-|

Wow what a suprise no sympathy coming from your neck of the woods, I'm glad VA appears to be doing well... ;)

I think its a bit callous of a remark, I feel sorry for all employees at all airlines who have lost/will lose their postions because of the downturn in international travel - it is through no fault of their own nor specifically of QF's either. Just because they were part of a company making money out of a route doesn't in my book mean they deserve what has happened.

Equally if VA ends up not being able to sustain their routes I would feel empathy for their staff losses (and I do of course for the the already redundent DJ workers).

I think some empathy and awareness that there are human faces behind these companies regardless of whether you like them or not is sometimes good to remember...

Bit sad about the 738's, i would have thought they may have said lets get all our domestic fleet to 738 maybe... but i guess some of the 734's are only new as well.

E

At least the 733's look like still being out of the fleet by year end.

I actually like the 734s a bit more than the 738s.

Sure, the 734s are noisier and feel a bit more "clunkier" than the 738s. The leg room in row 4 of a 738 is excellent (as are the exit rows, but at least with row 4 you have space to shove your cabin baggage under the next seat). 738s have real J seats - Millennium only, but still - 734s just have Y seats a little wider with a tray table (a la DJ PE style). However, on a 734 most of the time you get great leg room in rows 4, 5 and 6. This works out better for SG pax, or even PS, and even WPs who aren't fortunate enough to score row 4 etc.

Only other disadvantages of 734s is that if you ever get a B or E seat in the convertible rows, you have to be pretty skinny to be comfortable. Last time I flew a 734 (first time as a WP!) the middle seat of row 4 was blocked out, so it was pretty much as good as J! J pax on a 734 might not feel as valued as such because there is no curtain, no wall and so no real means of separation - you just happen to be another customer with a better seat etc. etc. Also, sometimes they get snitchy and convert all of the convertible rows into J seats. This means that there are no Y seats with nice leg room (except row 7 and the exit rows).

I guess the main issues with aircraft deferral for QF are age and maintainability.

I can always be sure that you will respond to my remarks if I mention Qantas in anything other than glowing terms. Perhaps you are a QF troll?

A few points in response:
1. For someone who has spent a good deal of time slagging off at DJ for all manner of reasons, I think this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

2. None of my comments were directed towards the employees of Qantas. I have a number of friends working for QF (2 pilots, 3 cabin crew, 2 in admin) and hope they all survive the crisis. My comments were directed at management.

I. Just because they were part of a company making money out of a route doesn't in my book mean they deserve what has happened....

No one is saying they cant make money, but they are known to be rather arrogant. Just like at all the changes to the Ff program when they had no competitor domestically (ie before velcoity) and this anti competiitve rubbish with direct earn cards

Sad news but given the state of the economic climate not unexpected. Hopefully Qantas, and all airlines, are able to bounce back quickly and the people who have lost their jobs do not stay out of work for too long....
