Hello All,

(Have also posted this in QFF thread but wondered if this is a better place for it - apologies to the mods if this annoys:oops:)

Mrs Zeit and I are planning to fly QF Y+ SYD - LHR.

I fly 17/18 Dec returning 2 Jan, whilst Mrs Z flies 23/24 Dec returning 2 Jan.

Any help with flight choice would be much appreciated i.e. best flight and best seats.

Options are:

17/18 Dec - QF 1 or QF 31
23/24 Dec - QF 31 / QF 9, QF1, or QF 31
2 Jan - QF 2 (QF 10 / QF 6 is available but no Y+ on QF 6)

Are there still differences in the Y+ product between the Airbus or Boeings or have QF now fitted all with the same product?

I'm also QFF Gold so wondering what Y+ and Y loadings are currently like (not sure how you seat magicians work this out) - not expecting an Op Up obviously but it's always nice to dream :p

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

A380 has 2-3-2 upper deck seating not 2-4-2 lower deck for what that's worth, also slightly bigger monitors. Theres a self serve snack bar, cant remember if thats available on the 747.

I sleep better on A380 possibly because better pressurised than 747 and (like most) would select them over the 747. However this makes them popular, and I wouldn't sit on a cough seat just to watch the light show in the toilets and a marginally bigger screen:

17/18 Dec - QF 1 or QF 31
Packed to the rafters on QF31 in both Y+ and J, your only unblocked seat in Y+ as an SG is middle seat 39E. Upgrade chances similar to a snowball's chance in Port Moresby

QF1 has plenty of Y+ aisle seats left, for some reason the vacant windows are all blocked

Unless you fancy warring with your neighbour over both your armrests, and like climbing over people, choice is a lay down misere

23/24 Dec - QF 31 / QF 9, QF1, or QF 31
There are very few seats allocated on QF1 but QF31 is close to full in Y+ and J; only a couple unblocked aisle seats left SYD-LHR on QF31. Ditto with business so at this stage your upgrade chances, as previously, appear better on QF1, but don't hold your breath

QF31/QF9 gives you a sample pack of both aircraft; plenty of choices left in Y+ on the QF31 SYD-SIN sector, plenty of aisles on the SIN-LHR QF9 sector, but windows all blocked or taken

2 Jan - QF 2 (QF 10 / QF 6 is available but no Y+ on QF 6)

Pretty full. No windows available/unblocked in Y+ and no opposite aisles, so only seat pairs are DE and FG in the middle. Someone misses out on an aisle if you want to sit together.

Sensible state of mind. Dont expect anything on the kangaroo route. I've tried numerous times as an SG but never succeeded. When travelling solo chances are much better. Press the magic button anyway, you just never know.

Thanks Skip,

As ever, the knowledge of people such as your good self about such things on this forum never fails to impress.

All very useful.

Cheers,

I'd hazard a guess that the magic button is "Apply for an Upgrade" - once you have made your booking and its is in the system- check under My Bookings and there you go!

As to upgrades - had a few of those as a mere SG - and had 'No Luck' as WP - so leave it up to you!

If you want the best seats and are a bit flexible on dates and/or where you leave Australia from there are other airlines that you can book through and get Business Class for cheaper than you will pay for Premium Economy with QF.

ie. Royal Brunei out of Brisbane or Lufthansa out of Sydney.

I did SYD/LHR return (QF1/QF32) two weeks ago - booked Y+ 48 hours before flight and pressed the upgrade button. Got the outbound J seat confirmed about 18 hours before the flight, and on the way back, J seat confirmed again about 15 hours before departure. Being WP probably helped, but therewere a few empty seats in both directions.

Excellent suggestion, but the thought having to change twice (Sing and Frankfurt) makes me wince and pushes the journey time up to 25-27 hours.

Also I want the SC from QF to keep me at SG. I've got the double SC promo, so the return leg with QF will net me 240 SC (still don't quite understand why Y+ doesn't give you more SC than full economy considering it's 50% dearer) with the outbound at 120 = a nice 360 SC.

Good to hear that, but I'm not intending to apply for an upgrade - saving the points for a splurge at a later date. I'm just quietly, but realistically, hoping for an Op Up at check-in seeing as I'm flying on my own SYD-LHR.

Moreover, the 60k points needed for Y+ to J seems steep to me, considering full Y to J is 60k also. Doesn't my extra cash mean anything to you Qantas?

I'm happy to be going Y+ (business would be a bonus) as I flew QF Y+ for the first time this year SFO-SYD and it made the world of difference compared to Y. I actually slept on a plane! :p

Cheers,

Zeit
