QF Platinum Recognition on flights

Now imagine, the pax name is harder to read - like mine :D the CSM takes a good 5seconds trying to pronounce the name, then another 5 seconds trying to sound the name, then only to ask you "how do I pronounce your name Mr. .... " followed by a long pause (and confused look in the eye) as I pronounce my name in its entirety. And they go "I would have never been able to pronounce that" and I go "yea, I get it" - awkward convo that lasts approx 2 minutes and by this time, the CSM is ready to move on to the next pax on the iPad list. :D #JoysOfFlying
Off course after saying that if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Make mine a champagne!
 
Former QF CSM and current FFPL here. Used to recognise FFPL’s then there became so many (30-40 on a MEL-SYD) so moved attention to FFPO’s (5-10, easier to do on a 50min sector).
Welcome to posting and hope you’ll share some more insights - with those numbers of FFPOs per golden triangle flight I’m nowhere near as special as I thought I was!
 
I was talking to a QF Cabin Manager on a recent international flight - he informed me part of his role was to introduce himself to Gold and Above QF members at the start of the flight. I found this quite surprising as before that flight is not had this experience. It was nice to have the additional, more personal welcome.
 
I'm a Qantas Silver member, but an interesting insight. A couple of days ago I flew Qantas First Syd - LHR. On the leg to SIN I was told the Patagonian toothfish wasn't available because there were a lot of Platinum members on the plane - assumption is they all wanted the toothfish! That was OK, I didn't need toothfish! Also, I was told there was no Rutherglen rare muscat on the aircraft! Why pay thousands of dollars when you can't get toothfish or muscat ;)

We have a friend who is a pilot and often flies from Sydney or MEL to DFW. Pilots see passenger lists and he said that often there are only 1 or two Platinum members on board.
I'd imagine it's route dependant. DFW would be an interesting case. I have to imagine the corporates that are going east coast are on QF3/4. LAX connects to a lot more options as well so DFW would potentially have less higher status pax.

I can't imagine that being the case on routes like SIN/LHR and HKG though. But then on a route like CGK, there's probably very few plats on that.

Especially on short domestic sectors. Was much easier on long haul flights. Would always instruct crew offer first choice of meal in J class. I came back from DFW yesterday in J Class and 2 of the entree options had run out. Unless the entire J class waa FFPL, I find it had to believe 2 options has been exhausted prior to getting to me. I fly AA quite a bit and definitely zero recognition. But then again, its AA 🤣🤣

Having finally qualified for WP on a SYD-CHC (in paid J) was faintly disappointed that there wasn't some kind of inflight ceremony (a shower of glitter, a congratulatory visit from the pilot, something along those lines... :D ) but sadly no... just the little 'Congratulations' animation when I refreshed my app inflight to see my shiny new status.

But all joking aside, was interested to see whether I could discern any difference inflight on my return AKL-SYD a week later - this time in Y as my upgrade didn't clear. Just a cheerful 'Welcome back' at the door, but that was it. (Oh, and I did get an invitation to the EK lounge rather than the Strata lounge, which was nice.) So 0 for 1 as a WP on QF on (short-haul) international.

Should I find myself in Y or PE on a future flight and getting one of these personalised greetings, what's the etiquette about asking for a glass of champagne or nice wine from biz? That's a benefit I could definitely appreciate. Or is it more a case of wait and see if they offer anything?

Of course give it a go. I've asked in Y, and not been disappointed.

Yes you can ask for such a glass - imho much else would be pushing the friendship. Don't wait otherwise you'll be waiting a long time!

Out of interest, have you managed this on short-haul / narrowbody flights? Or just long-haul / larger aircraft?

More international (regardless of aircraft), but don't count on them coming down to Y to find you. It's not consistent.

Domestic it barely happened even transcontinental on the 787.
