I noticed that QF have a sale fare in premium economy Melbourne to London for $3,095. Adding in a Europe side trip (e.g. Berlin on BA, QF flight number) drops it to about $2,950. Looking at the usual PE fares this seems a pretty good deal with some decent SC earn. Have they been this low in other sales before?

Yes, this offer was uploaded last week and is great value considering an economy and fare to Europe was the same amount 12 years ago.
Dates available from Late January from memory.

That sounds correct - can you get status credits (equivalent) for a comfort seat on SQ?

here is something I am thinking about, SQ is doing Y specials to London for about 1,200 AUD return, therefore if I buy two Y seats, it is still cheaper than this PeY deal, and I think it might be more comfortable as I can occupy two adjacent Y seats ?

QF PE can be very comfortable IF you can secure bulkhead seat. Also, soft product is closer to J than Y so I would go for 1XPE rather than getting 2XY seats.

$3,000 for PE to LHR is Ok but unless chasing SCs, smart purchase of points can get you to Europe in J.

Seeing this I was about to kick myself, then I saw that during my dates the price is actually $6731 (peak season) so I'm still happy with my BNE-SIN-DXB-LHR-DXB-SIN-MEL-BNE itinerary :)

It's an ok deal if you will only consider the convenience of a straight through flight. If you are willing to take a few extra hours you can get a mixed class (economy to asia, full flat business from there to Europe) for around the same price.

Now this sounds interesting! More searching I shall do.

Thanks for the tip. I'll do some more research to see if I can find something like you suggest. Planning the trip in April. Cheers.

Am I right in thinking that these mixed class fares can only be booked by a travel agent? I can’t find anywhere that I can book these online, or any mention of a mixed class fare close to the $3K mark. Have you got any additional hints for me? I’ll continue the search.

mixed class can be booked yourself, but it involves two tickets, one ex Australia, the other ex Asia. Deals ex Asia change almost daily, but the 'regulars' in the $2000-2500 range include Sri Lankan (ex bangkok in particular), Vietnam airlines, Qatar, Oman air, sometimes finnair. Google flights is a good starting point, mix and match origins and destinations, and check AFF's 'cheap international fares' thread. note the UK will have a much much higher tax, so if you want to save money you could fly in to London and out of Europe.

ex Asia starting points are KUL, SIN, BKK, HKG (sometimes), MNL, CGK.

combine that ticket with your choice of economy class to Asia, but as its separate tickets, leave a good connecting time (you know, not an hour to have to collect bags, clear immigration etc). or even build in a stopover if you want.

for london, buying miles through lifemiles is a good choice, with their recent 240% bonus the fare would have been ~$3110 (Aussie) plus actual taxes (no fuel surcharges). that would be on Thai airways, business class all the way from Australia, straight through on the same ticket.

yes, I recently flew CX PeY, they have too much recline and the pax in front usually recline to the max, I found this very uncomfortable as I need at least 2 feet in front of my face.
that's why I prefer 2 Y seats so if I seat across I can have at least 4-5 feet in front of my face.

so either bulkhead PeY, or for me 2 Y seats

ANA is another option flying SYD-HND-LHR and vv.

I note that a "from $3,080" return is now available as part of the Chinese New Year sale. However, I can't find a single date even close to this price. Does Expert Flyer show all fare types, as there is no fare returned for this price? I wonder if it's a typo on the QF page (or if I am looking at it the wrong way).

I checked a few random dates and can't find the fare either. You might have to use chat or call QF and ask them to do a search for you. If it is an error, they might honour if you call them.
