Hi everyone,

I will be flying Melbourne to Singapore in October and I'm planning on going First class (to treat myself for my birthday). I'm not sure whether to fly with QF or SIA.

As far as price goes, there is not much difference between the two. For the flights I am looking at QF is slightly more expensive, but I'll get extra FF points using my credit card, as well as FF points for flying with them, so price is much of a muchness.

I will be able to use the new First lounge in Melbourne which looks fantastic, but I don't know what the First Lounge is like in Singapore (a shared lounge with BA I would imagine). And as for SIA I don't know what their First lounges are like in MEL or Singapore.

I've heard that SIA often tops the polls for best FIRST Class airline. Unfortunately the flights will not be on the new B777-300ER which have their new First Class cabins, which just look amazing.

So which is better - QF or SIA?

Any advice people could give would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Don't discount Cathay F class which is very good, and you can put any points to QF should you wish. It will come down to costs though.

by October, SQ may have their A380 operating that route, so I would expect SQ F on an A380 would be quite an experience compared with QF's current F product. However, I expect you will find both to be very nice.

CX has a v nice F but going via HKG would be a very long route at 6168 miles vs 3907. Not worth such a diversion. If I was doing it, I would be tempted with SQ

Unfortunately the SQ Flounges in both MEL and SIN are both pretty dated and average, especially now with Dom Perignon in SIN replaced by Piper reserve... Nice satays in SIN though. You'd have to wait till Terminal 3 opens in January for new SQ Flounges.

You will get a F check in lounge in SIN with porter assistance, similar to QF's curbside check in.

SQ's strength is its onboard product, with lesser seats on the 744 than QF and some of the best cabin crew in the world. You can Book The Cook on SQ, a service that allows you to pre-order your meal from a list that includes favourites like Chilean Sea Bass, and Lobster Thermidor. Plus both Dom AND Krug in F.

To enjoy the Skysuites, make sure you book SQ228/227. Currently the Skysuites are only on the 744s, with an enhanced version on the 77Ws which will be deployed on SQ218/217 in November but that's not in time for your departure alas.

Having said all that, I think QF has now closed the gap a bit with its new onboard soft product and Flounges. Given that the schedules of QF9/10 and SQ228/227 are similar - perhaps the next thing you might want to consider is the cost, and the FFP you want to accrue miles to.

SHOCKING NEWS: No More DOM served at SKL F Changi - SQTalk

OTOH there are unconfirmed rumours that Dom will be back after the Sep1 PPS Changes when most of the existing Floungers will no longer be able to access the Flounge, a strange way of giving those who continue to achieve access 'god-like treatment' since they haven't really come up with actual enhancements for the PPS Club or the state of the Flounge.

I'm going to be a bit of a prick here but ....for the 7 hour flight to Singapore it really makes precious little difference. I would go QF business myself and not worry about it. But if going First to spoil yourself is what you feel like doing, I would go QF for the SC's and to use the new lounge. Onboard SQ product and service (as long as you are on the 744) is a teeny weeny bit better.

If the A380 is in service for SQ well there is no question...you must try it.

I believe the first A380 flights are servicing Sydney rather than Melbourne.

I would consider routing via SYD from MEL to earn an extra 1250 miles and some qpoints ;) I am very tired right now...
