All the reasons quoted are internal factors that don't seem to have been managed well.

Services haven't been cut and planes continue to be highly utilised, the company continues to make record profits. What part of it isn't being well managed.

Had the had a situation re Ryanair or Emirates, they perhaps we could consider it badly managed. but QF is simply putting 747s onto transcon...

They are putting a 747 onto trans con, and an A330 onto PER-SIN to free up 737 flying time.

737 utilisation is being decreased due to a pilot shortage. That pilot.shortage is of their own making.

Qantas seem to have a thing for running end of life 747s on domestic duties to Perth. They did it with the -200s and the -300s.
They did. I remember the -300s. It was a disaster. Virtually every flight was delayed with technical issues (I think a combination of end of life planes and restricted capability in Perth). I well remember the afternoon flight out of Perth turning into the midnight flight and then the next day 7 am flight and then the late morning flight. Then boarding to have more technical issues (an hour or so) and then another hours wait because the NEXT flight (747 too) also had technical issues and so they waited until that was declared a no go and loaded those passengers onto our flight.

Is there much difference between whY on a 737 and A330?
I haven’t flown on an A330 before.
It looks like J is heaps better on A330 so it might be more worthwhile requesting the upgrade and there are more J seats so should increase my chances of being successful.
Twin aisle as opposed to single aisle, IFE and overall better comfort for that length of flight.

In my opinion the scale is 737/A320/787 -> A330/A350 -> A380 -> 747. I have been known to choose routes with the better aircraft rather than going direct.

Thanks for the info Daver6 and JohnK.

Looks like this will be a better flight now with the A330 and the family can all sit together and not be next to other people.

Lack of 737 pilots may be the reason that Qantaslink 717's are now doing about half the CNS - BNE flights. I've been wondering why.

IFE is much of a muchness between the 737's on the QF71/72/77/78 run and the A330's.

Good point, I was wondering the reason when I noticed that the flight number and aircraft changed on my booking to CNS in September. I had upgraded to J for the BNE-CNS leg as the transit in BNE was short and I wanted to have a decent meal some time in the 6 hrs of travelling. First time I'll be in J on a 717.

Qantas brings the Airbus A380 back onto Sydney-Hong Kong

A380 back on the SYD-HKG route, will it be for good?

I'm a complete novice in regards to the aviation industry, but why would they not sell tickets (& release award inventory) for the first class cabin? Surely selling a few tickets, or getting 'revenue' from QF Loyalty would provide a better return then just allowing the upgraded seat selection for J travellers?

QF rosters the A380 in and out of HKG depending on the season and demand. Not having it consistently would pose many issues if selling an F fare and then subbing the aircraft out if need be. Also the services needed to support F pax. AU-HKG clearly doesn't have much F demand otherwise, CX would bring in aircraft with F too, but there isn't any available.

I took the article as it being a permanent change from August. It definitely makes sense why they do not sell the seats if you are only doing short seasonal equipment swaps.

Gets rostered on from August till about Chinese New Year, then gets taken off again. AusBT write the same story twice a year ... yet its been happening for years. With the 787s, the A380 might become a more regular feature on HKG though.

i thought I might treat my little one to a jumbo flight while they're cheap on domestic, but would need to be late September. Latest I can see the 747 doing the route is 5th September :(

And may be why the PER-ASP late morning flight (a 717) now is scheduled to leave at 0630... :-(

Just checked my booking for QF71/72 in October and noticed mine has been changed from 737 to A330 as well. They also moved our seats from 4A,4B,5A,5B on the 737 to 25A,25B,26A,26B on the A330..

A further improvement for you Deeks. 2 abreast seating in A330 means 25B and 26B have an aisle next to them, instead of another passenger. For twosomes in Y, A330 beats 737 (and 787) hands down.

There appear to be a lot of 717s flying BNE-TSV as well as BNE-CNS

Cheers skip

So hi!

I'm glad i read the aff newsletter as today on my flight from PER to SYD i knew what was going on... I'd selected 48B on the a330 only to find myself allocated the same seat on the 747 - a dreaded middle seat!

Got to the airport, asked at the counter and got moved to premium economy... thanks for the tip AFF! Mind you I'm just a bronze member, so while the word isn't out there might be a fair bit of availability towards the front...

I then headed to Qantas club lounge, as I'd received an email offer for access which wasn't working... they offered me a business upgrade instead for 25k points which i thought more than reasonable given I'd paid $189 for the discount economy ticket!

So while I'd love to offer my input on premium economy domestic, I really can't :)

But i was happy with the business seats, I expected the aircraft to look dated but I thought the product was good quality, and more attentive service than when i last flew qf business about ten years ago. (Which was an ancient 737 without even personal entertainment!!)

Given there are so many more business seats, i recommend passengers looking for an easy or cheap upgrade to consider the 747 flights while they're still running!

It's worth noting that a week before departure I was offered to bid for an upgrade which would have cost minimum $125 plus 19600 points - pretty glad I didn't bid!

I've just received notification of a flight change: QF575 SYD-PER on October 3 now a 747 (originally 737).
We have been allocated premium economy seats 37A & 37B
