QF / JQ codeshare

Noticed on a couple of occassions recently that several Qantas flights have been run as codeshare with Jetstar. Had to look twice, because while this might be a form of economic efficiency - it certainly seems to contradict the market and process differentiation both companies claimed they strived for...

Not sure if this has always happened or is a new/growing phenomena.

Often will be a codeshare to Melbourne (Tulla) airport to co-incide with a Jetstar International flight, or a flight to SYD airport where Jetstar doesn't normally fly from (also to meet up with a J* Intl flight).

I believe Qantas codeshares with J* on the Honolulu route, but not sure of any others.

From a chat to a travel agent friend there are JQ codeshares on QFD for JQ* and ecy into SYD from -BNE MEL ADL & PER. To MEL from BNE,SYD,ADL &PER with CNS from SYD and BNE for Jpn expected to follow.
The rason I'm told is QF staff will transfer bags...aviod purely JQ to JQI as you have to pick up yr bags and do it yrself
 
SIN-DRW-CNS is another one. But I don't think you can book it as QF unless you're flying into SIN on QF, or on an award.

To expand a little on this problem, Qantas is starting to tear a hole in the bottom of their “priority” customer list. While it is patched with a good “loyalty bandage”, it is becoming bloodied.


To delineate Priority customers, you need to have Plebs as well! As QF keeps sending its lower yielding routes over to JQ, we are seeing QF fly more of its aircraft full of "priority" customers. Noting threads on AFF, and other websites, as examples - a common complaint is baggage and Qantas seating allocation.

Earlier this year I, (FF Platinum), was travelling on a Qantas domestic 737 service with two FF Golds and two Qantas Clubbers, on separate itineraries. I thought to ring “Qantas priority” and have the two Golds linked to my booking, but forgot about the Qantas Pub Bronzers. :oops:

Arriving at the airport separately, Qantas was fantastic at check-in – as the first to get there, I asked if the Golds were seated next to me, being a 737 I was expecting ABC, or DEF… The “cheeky check-in agent” (I like that) said that wasn’t the case, but I could change it if I wanted... however, at the moment our allocation was; me 4A, with 4B blocked and the two Golds 5A, 5C with 5B blocked. Of course, I decided to accept this offer (far better than 3 of us in one row methinks).

However, get off at the other end of the flight (it was a connection, so we all popped into the “Club” for a drink) and the Qantas Clubbers (who I hadn’t linked to my itinerary) were pissed off! The more frequent traveller of them had forward aisle as a preference, and was seated with the other one (without a blocked seat) well behind the emergency exit!

Anyway, a few glasses of the bubbles cleared the atmosphere… but I'm sure Qantas knows it is creating a "Priority" definition problem- by moving the people that normally sit down the back, off to Jetstar!

As an aside, providing your QF FF number is in the booking you will receive your "priority" seating on the QF segment of your JQ itinerary. I flew to BNE-MEL-BKK in Apr as a then QP NB and on the QF BNE-MEL segment I was allocated 5D and 5F with 5E blocked as my Forward Aisle preference. Not bad for a jetsaver fare on a JQ flight number. Theres only one row better, or one class.... but like that's going to happen. ;)
