Hi,

I'm off to USA in a week or so on QF from MEL, I'm just curious to see if the baggage allowances for carry on have changed recently as I'm going to take by laptop backpack and a shoulder slung DSLR camera bag (not much larger than the 40D it's holding), both will be well under the 7kg limit and well and truly within the dimesions allowed on the QF website. However I was reading the baggage info online and aparently the 1 bag + 1 personal item only applies to F and J pax, not to Y - they only get 1 bag. I'm QP (not that it helps much :)) and neither will look heavy and unmanageable - will I run into any probs from QF from having both do you think?

I've done this before on QF to the USA with these bags and had no problems at all but the last time was back in late '08, I'm not sure if the rules have changed since then.

Cheers!

Uzza

The mention of "personal item" has been removed from the main page; however there is still reference to "personal item" and bag elswhere.

In any case, for USA flights it is mandated by USA authorities (between OZ and the USA).

More here: Fly - Baggage - Carry-on Baggage - Country Specific - Travel to and from the USA

My recent WHY experience with Qantas concurs with this in that they will allow a rollaboard and a laptop.

Thanks serfty,

I suspect that I shouldn't run into any issues, I mean its relatively small and my backpack is certainly not bulging out so I'd have to get a pretty rough FA at the gate to pull me up :)

is this allowance for "personal items" the same for flights from brisbane <-> London? On previous flights i've traveled with a small camera bag. this time i also want to take a laptop bag.

cheers,
Jamie.

I travelled on QF29 last month; a rollabord and laptop were ok.

This is slightly OT: but has the outbound passenger processing changed at MEL yet? ie. is security now before Passport Control? I saw that the new gates are running but I wasn't sure how far on that job they had got.

Yep, cough-about to how it used to be...
