QF International Upgrade Success at Airport

Maybe a good subject for a future Mythbusters episode :D. I have never upgraded or even asked myself, but as stated we do see reports from time to time.

Hi Markis

I have read the entire thread you posted and can only see mention of people being called before the departure date and offered a paid upgrade. Nowhere in the post can I see any reference to anyone just turning up at the airport and getting the option in the lounge or check in to pay for an upgrade nor any mention of being able again to use points at check in which is what we are discussing.

Being contacted by the airline and offering the ability to use points and or cash to upgrade is not the issue here.

In 2009 or maybe it was 2008, cant remember, too much flying.. fuzzy brain  I was in the US, with two days before my departure home. I was in Texas leaving the following morning for a flight to LAX to catch my flight home the day after. While in a supermarket, of all places in Dallas.
I got a call on my mobile from QF operations in Brisbane. At first I thought it was one of my friends playing funny buggers with me but once the operator started quoting me my flight details etc., I knew this was not the case.
She offered, if I would like to upgrade to J from Y for an extra $700. I asked her does this also apply to my family of 2 who are also travelling with me. It didnt though they thought I was a single traveller. My family members were on a separate PNR. She was able to put us all on one PNR.
I declined the offer I felt guilty me in J and the family in Y. :(

Upon checking in at LAX the three of us were upgraded from Y to PE. (Now I am lucky enough to travel in J)..
Very nice flying the then brand new A380, btw I loved the old configuration of the A380.

I have also had two further upgrades since then one in SIN and the other LHR at the gate both times. Never requested. The upgrades were also for my family.:)

..My question is, how successful has any one been requesting and receiving an upgrade on points at the Airport when checking in or at the lounge when no upgrade request has been in place already through manage my booking
No one yet has put up their hand to say this has happened. People on this forum are more likely to ask for an upgrade than the average passenger.

Being contacted by QF and them trying to extract more $$ for from the punter for an upgrade is not what was asked in post 1

However, I would think that people on this forum would be less likely to ask for an upgrade at the airport than your average passenger. I know I have taken some friends and family to the airport and they asked expectantly at check-in if an upgrade was available (always "no") . In my experience, individuals who ask at the airport for upgrades don't often travel and may not be members of frequent flyer programs.

From what I have gathered it seems fruitless to ask but if there are people who are willing to ask - good for them! Maybe one day it will happen!

It has happened to me. I was on QF81 from SYD to ADL. I asked for a points upgrade in the First Lounge and a J boarding pass was brought to me about 10 minutes later. This was about 2 weeks ago.

yes that is Domestic leg not an International Leg

Yes, but it is flight number 81 which is clearly excluded from ODUs in the terms and conditions. The T&Cs talk about flight numbers 1 - 399, not domestic or international legs. I was quite surprised when I got the upgrade as I didn't think it would be allowed.

Perhaps it is something to do with your WP1 Status. Did they deduct points or take money for the upgrade?

Purely domestic.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh Ok so it wasnt an International flights as per normal rules if it was booked as a domestic leg so still no evidence of on departure upgrades on International departures at check in or Lounge with out previously registering :D lol

Still against the rules:

On Departure Upgrades are not available on the domestic legs of Qantas operated international services (QF1-199).

And is indicative of the capability for it to be done.

has anyone actually called up and asked about a cash payment upgrade to business from Y? I'm on QF1 in a few months and booked into economy to hope that 80A/K would be free and they weren't so I'm thinking its going to be worth trying to pay for an upgrade now but not sure if it is possible.

I've managed to request an upgrade using points on my return flight back from LHR so happy with the gamble of that coming off but am pretty keen to try for premium or J on the way over, any indications on cost from a sale Y ticket for this?
