Qantas announced it would increase capacity from Perth to a number of Western Australian destinations from today.

Qantas Group Executive Commercial Rob Gurney said the increased capacity would further meet demand from regional communities and industries including the resource sector across Western Australia.

“Qantas is always focused on meeting market demands and responding with increased capacity, where appropriate,” Mr Gurney said.

“From today we will be increasing capacity from Perth to Karratha, Newman, Paraburdoo, Port Hedland and Broome.

“The changes will see around nine additional return services per week and 3466 seats per week added to the market and include the upgrade of several services from B717 to B737 aircraft. On an annualised basis, this equates to more than 180,000 additional seats.

To provide the new capacity Qantas has added a B737-800 aircraft to its Perth based fleet to service key regional ports. This is the second B737-800 to be delivered to the Perth fleet in 2011.

The intra-Western Australia schedule changes include:

  • three new Perth-Karratha return services and the upgrade of four return services from a B717 to a B737 adding 1,120 seats on the route each week;
  • four additional Perth-Newman return services adding 1,132 seats on the route each week;
  • three new Perth-Paraburdoo return services adding 690 seats on the route each week;
  • the upgrade of three Perth-Port Hedland return services from a B717 to a B737 adding 318 seats per week;
  • the upgrade of one Perth-Broome return services from a B717 to a B737 adding 106 seats per week

Wonderful, I've always wanted to go to Paraburdoo!!! No really, I have... :)

We in the West are very spoiled sometimes... ;)

So does this mean that a few B717 may come back to the east coast of australia. due to you would think that qantas will add more 738 and Q400 over the coming years?

It's already been announced that BNE will get some.

Still holding out for 717's to mark a return of QF to OOL ;)

There have been many murmurs and rumors about QFLink resurfacing there.... Not holding my breath though!

I hope they increase the size of the qantas club to match. It's already jam packed in Perth.. last 3 times i've been in there, I could barely get a seat.

Where would they use to increase the QP area?

It is all about timing at the QP, beat the FIFO and red eye rush, it is actually nice and quiet;-)

WHat they really need to do is get the Paraburdoo to Tom Price code share happening again (not mentioning the b*s) :mrgreen:

Perth must be a struggle to manage, I either find it packed or completely empty!!

Well the first question is if they would even consider increasing it.

The 2010/11 expansion was done with the intent of that providing sufficient expansion to last through to the eventual 2020 consolidation, which will consolidate DOM and INT ops over at the Horrie Miller Dr terminal area.

And as mannej mentioned, this lounge is really about timing to beat/manage the FIFO crush and demand from pax on A333 and B747-3 services on the PER/MEL/SYD triangle.

Where would they use to increase the QP area?
If they were to do this - it would be in a similar fashion to the 2010/11 expansion, which would create a new level heading Gate 11 heading north. Again, this would come down to if the payoff was there considering how long it was in use plus the proximity to recent works that were already intended to last for much longer.

If you remember that as part of this upgrade, a large amount of parking space was reclaimed that was then used for valet parking.
