QF holds onto SYD T3

Interesting and very pro-QF article.

Especially interesting to me is the plan to refurbish the lounges to International standards. Should we expect an F class lounge for J/OWE pax?

Perhaps I'm more glad that MAp doesn't get to manage more property than it already deserves.

I'm not sure how good a job QF really does when it comes to terminals, but at worst between them and MAp, I'd pick QF.

I think SYD T3 is the premium domestic terminal in the country and I like the way it is “all Qantas” from the moment you walk in the doors. By retaining control QF can continue to develop it as a flagship and that to me is good news.

Positive: I'd love to see a similar approach in other cities.

Negative: Note to QF: SYD isnt the only Airport in Australia!

The article states the lease is up for renewal in 2014… how long is the lease for when they do renew?

Oh, I hope so!

Aren’t they just finishing up with the J/OWE lounge upgrades in major cities anyway? I guess a simple rebrand of those lounges wouldn’t be too complex, but considering they’ve just about finished the current set of upgrades, I wouldn’t think now is the time to change them again.

well that is pretty much the same at MEL T1. It's all Qantas too (Ok a few J* flights)

Yeah JQ is there and also the MEL terminals are all in the same building (except the low cost one) so I never really see them as distinct terminals. Also MEL T1 doesn’t have the same branding impact as SYD T3 in my view. So along with the obvious commercial advantages, I can understand why QF would want to retain ownership of T3.

I would say the lease negotiation will begin now - SYD was leased to MAp for 99 years - i would assume Qantas would negotiate at least a 10 year contract.

The report did say a new lounge improvement program was planned.

Well MEL has a all TT terminal called T4. May they should roll that out to the rest of the country as well? ;)
