I got an e-mail from Qantas today advising that my flight times had changed.
Have had 'em before, usually 5 or 10 mins, so was not concerned. Until I opened the mail.

We're on QF131 MEL-AKL in April, originally scheduled to depart (I think, am not at home so cannot access the e-ticket receipt) at 1610. QF131 on our date (and seemingly permanently, judging from a few random date checks) has been shifted forward to an 1150 departure (and QF133 forward from ~1830 to 1730).

The time change, for me (haven't been able to contact travelling companion yet) is not a huge deal (but would still prefer the later departure - not getting up at sparrow-fart, and a non-breakfast menu in the Flounge :)) but there is also an equipment change, from a 738 (with AVOD) to a 734. Of course, I had selected the flight to get the 738 (the AVOD makes it go so much quicker IMHO).

A complicator is that we have 4C and 4D on QF131, but looking at EF for QF133 for the same day, row 4 is completely blocked (not just selected, but blocked with an 'X').

So, after the long-winded scene-setting (), my questions are:

1/ What options/rights, if any, do we have as far as changing flights - without penalties - goes (given it's been moved forward by 4 hrs 20 mins)?

2/ Any ideas why row 4 on QF133 would be showing 'blocked' on EF, when I was able to select it when originally booking QF131? I would happily change to QF133 but would prefer to retain row 4 if possible. And on that note, is it still possible for WPs to request exit row allocations in Y on a Trans-Tasman flight. I know they now sell them on most international flights, but seem to recall that TT may be different?

If we just accept the time and equipment change it's hardly the end of the world (well, from my viewpoint, unsure about travelling companion yet), but am keen to know what 'rights' or options we might have in the circumstances.

Cheers

I thought the X on EF was better as that means you have more chance of getting the seat. When the seat is occupied it's taken, whereas blocks can and do change.

Of course EF seat maps have been useless for me recenty and I'm certainly no expert.

If the flight is not till April and you're a WP I'd just keep checking back every now and then. Quite often row 4 is blocked for me too but I just keep checking back every few days and I'd say 80% of the time I can grab 4A, C, D or F on the 73H.

Thanks for the replies.

It was a breeze. Rang QF, said the change was not convenient, the nice lady said no problem, onto QF133, no charge, and row 4 seats to boot (allocated by default).

I think I'm predisposed to expect the worst, so when things go right I'm happy! :)
