QF Fuel Fines are increasing (again)

Just be thankful that we have a currency that's so high against the International basket of currencies. I pity those who have to pay the fuel fines in countries where their currency is continually sliding .. like the US.

.... Oh, wait a minute ....

The thing about these surcharges, is lead-in prices always adjust to supply and demand anyway, but the surcharges do impact the more flexible fares, multi sector (circle/RTW) and of course awards. And typically award availability (in economy) correlate fairly well with lead-in fares, so what used to be, say 128,000 pts +$600 in surcharges (SYD-LHR) will be 128,000 pts + $1060 in surcharges, yet the paid fare may well have only increased $100 or $200. i.e. Another points devaluation.

I have never liked these "fuel surcharge" Ibelieve they should set their prices to be a "Ticket price"not plus this and plus that etc. Fuel is a major part of a seat price on an aircraft, and IIRC, it was placed on ticket prices initially over and above the (at the time) current Ticket price, during the High oil prices of the 90's. They hedge their fuel prices, (What period of time they set the price for I have no idea, and maybe its a very short period, hence the charge) they sell tickets, they should just set their ticket prices accordingly. This is not directed at Qantas, its just a general rant about something that most airlines do that really gets on my nerves. I know some trucking companies do it too, its plain wrong. (Thats just my simple opinion)

:(

Does this mean that the fuel surcharge will be removed when the price of fuel drops? :p

So it might be wise to book before April 12? Looking at points for a holiday to NZ in Sept. The extra "fees and charges and taxes and levies and plus plus" are already $675 for four tickets, how much more will that go up?

Solution = gift voucher

Just wondering how that works with the bold statement from Qantas on this page: Qantas gift vouchers | Give the gift of experience
It mentions there how surcharges etc. need to be paid with credit card... does that not then get a credit card fee? Only asking as an interested party who pulled out of a booking at the last minute last night when I got slugged with a $15+ credit card fee for a points and pay type asa booking. I was trying to keep a few points in the bank but ended up just using them nearly all to pay the asa so I didn't get a fee!

Purchase a $50 voucher and then use Voucher to pay for a $122 SYD-BNE flight. You will find a $122 SYD-BNE flight comprises of ~$99 airfare and ~$23 taxes so you will need to make up the difference of $72 between your $50 voucher value and cost of airfare.

No credit card surcharge is payable as you are using a voucher to pay for flights.

Note though that if the voucher value is too high then the lower priced airfares are not going to appear in the search.

I did exactly this the other day. As JohnK says just check the fare vs. taxes amount through using the ITA fare matrix first so that you don't end up with a voucher that is greater than the fare amount.

Actually, you can check the taxes on the Qantas site. When you get to the Step 3- Review your flights, the total price is hyperliked. Clicking on this will give a box listing the fare and taxes.

And at the moment my SYD-BNE flights are $99 airfare and $23 taxes. Wish it was $100 airfare and $22 taxes as I still have 9 $100 vouchers I need to use in the very near future.

So if you book a return flight for $198 can't you use a $100 voucher?

Also, can you buy gift vouchers for yourself?

Yes you can but I do not have that many weeks left to book flights before 26 December. :(

I bought 34 for myself! ;) And now I know the trick I do not believe I will be purchasing another Qantas domestic flight without first purchasing a gift voucher. :p

In my case 30 or 35 times $7.70 is a very significant amount that would be best used on other more important neccesities of travel. ;)

Thanks John, I wil be buying $50 vouchers before each booking from now on.

I just had a horrible thought. Do Qantas charge you the $7.70 for buyng the gift voucher with a credt card?

Also, can you use a gift voucher to avoid the $30 fee for an international ticket? And can you use vouchers for ASAs?

The bit on the qantas website about gift vouchers clearly says credit card surcharges do not apply.
