We were due to travel from UK to Australia, unfortunately via the Middle East this week. Obviously had to cancel as our travel insurance would have been invalidated due to Government advice. We’d booked internal flights with QF and VA on separate (non refundable) tickets. VA have very kindly given us a refund. QF will only offer a travel credit valid 12m from date of booking (Sept). We can’t now travel until October at the earliest so asked QF if able to extend the credit but they won’t. I’ve spoken to them by phone and emailed them. The flight is still booked for this Saturday 4/4. (Red eDeal cost $1000). Will we at least get the taxes refunded? Any other options anyone can think of before we lose this money?

Travel UK to AU on what airline? QR Qatar? Purchased from the airline or via travel agent? Airlines are still flying UK to AU.
Did you voluntarily or the airline cancel the UK AU flight? Did you ask for a reroute on another airline?
I would have waited until the airline formally cancelled the UK AU flight. Then claimed on your travel insurance. Big difference between the passenger voluntarily cancelling the flight and the airline cancelling the flight.

Real taxes on AU domestic flights are small.

I don’t see how travel insurance would come in here? The UK-AU flight being cancelled, due to war, would meet the exception. The standalone domestic? At best the inability to take that flight is consequential on the primary flight disrupted. Otherwise you’d need a policy that was ‘cancel for any reason’.

If the UK flight was not cancelled, but the passenger chose not to fly because of insurance concerns, then no cover.

Qantas does not have a reputation for being sympathetic or flexible. It is all about 💰🤑. You don't make $1.46B in profit over 6 months by giving out refunds.

What if you use the flight credit to book a flight and then cancel that for a second flight credit? Others can confirm if this will extend the validity of the flight credit.

Even though the travel credit is valid only until September, I think it can still be used before its expiry to book flights departing after October?

errr… they're giving you one year on a non-refundable fare? I think that’s reasonable?
