I only just joined my son (2 years !) last week and then was flying QF through the week and noticed in the QF Inflight Mag that joining the program is free until Dec ?? sometime.
Check the details. I'm trying for a refund !!!

I haven't had time to check but it was something like qantas.com.au/fflyer/do/dyns/joinffp?code=TRAVELAGENT or /free ?? Check the magazine !

Welcome to AFF!

You're officially the first person I know that has paid for basic FF membership.
Hope you can get it refunded.

There's been a bunch of free offers over the last couple of years, some of which keep getting extended. And you don't even need to go anywhere near the woolworths route to get it (although people love to trot that one out)

The free offers are so frequent that I cannot, for the life of me, understand why QF even have a joining fee since it only gives VA free reign to offer their programme "fee free" as a point of difference.

I'm surprised that Qantas is still charging people the joining fee for joining on their website using the official channel while simultaneously running a large campaign promoting free membership. Poor form IMHO.

Agreed, needed to sign up a family member yesterday who is based in NZ, saw the free promo on a billboard so went to the QF website, was prompted to pay so had to google for the free promo page.

They've done it for a very long time. Why would they stop?

Even better was the promo about a year ago; join for free, and get a bonus point for every point "earned" during the promo period, up to 10,000 points. Family transfers didn't count, but Aquire transfers did. ;)

You can always sign up for free via Woolworths everyday rewards too.
It will be interesting to see what if any spin QF puts out if you can no longer earn QFF points via EDR.
I would think (hope) that if the partnership ends QFF membership will become free as standard for everyone.

Could it be that if you joing QFF under any other scheme, you have to give a lot of details to the other organisation.
Where as if you join on the QFF website, their way to get max out of you is limited. Does not mean you won't get spammed, but at least less than if you provide your email address to all and sundry, EDR for eg.
I keep getting tonnes of WW EDR purchase this and that and the other from EDR. Also have gotten a lot of AMEX linked QFF offer letters to apply for an AMEX card.
If you were to join QFF under a credit card scheme, that credit card scheme would have carte blanch to email you offers, wouldn't they?

EDR for eg.

I've changed my EDR preferences such that I don't get anything from them at all. After the way that I was treated by one of their online chat staff earlier this year, they can jam their useless offers as far as I'm concerned. I only use it for the fuel discounts now, and nothing else.

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

There was a special Joey Club promotion earlier this year too: qantas.com/kids.

Please let me know via private message how you go with the refund.

You can't understand that Qantas are happy to take $80 from each person who isn't aware of the promo?

The free offers hold no value if there's no cost to become a member
Heck - QFF could double the cost to $200 and the 'free' offer becomes even more valuable as a promotion

Yes, the value of a 'notional value' for something that is actually free. I bet someone pays, eg. Accor, EDR, etc. might need to pay QF loyalty a small amount for each free signup.

It also brings in the psychology of selling, using reciprocity, ie. a debt the new member feels they owe QF (or the partner offering it) for the $80 discount they have received.
