Hi All,

I was wondering if someone could help me out with this. There are many destinations, mainly in Africa that Emirates flies to, but you cannot get a QF flight code on these flights.

I tried to book a flight out of either Tunis, Cairo or Casablanca, however the agent told me that they cannot book these with QF flight codes, therefore you cannot earn Qantas points or status credits.

Why is this the case? Is there any reason for it? Is there a workaround?

Hi there,

No, there is no workaround - these are just not cities / routes that QF and EK have agreed codeshares for. In my understanding, each individual sector is a separate agreemement - ie there is no general agreement for codesharing on all of an airlines routes.

However, if you use some online travel agents, you can book say Cairo - Brisbane, with stopover at Dubai, where the Cairo - Dubai segment is an EK flight, but the longer Dubai - Brisbane is an EK aircraft but the on a codeshare QF ticket. So you will get QF status credits and points for that.

Try looking at Hipmunk which allows you to easily distinguish which options have the part-QF codeshares.

Thanks for your quick response :)

It's a shame about that, but I guess there is nothing we can do :(

Only workaround I can think of is fly as close as you can to your destination on a QF flight and then hop on another plane.

QF Flight.png so i found this via Expedia. As you can see, it is an Emirates flight out of Cairo, but with a QF Flight number. Would this get me status credits? How trustworthy is Expedia in regards to this not being an error?

Thanks.

Online travel agents get no different availability of codeshares than anyone else. In fact they are likely worse availability because of how the EK/QF yield system works based on what else is in the PNR and what you search, in what order. Cairo is a codeshare destination.

Yes, but Qantas itself does not sell it! Hence the suggestion for third party travel agents.

I do not know the rationale, but Qantas will sell you via their website a ticket from (say) Sydney to Cairo, but they will NOT sell you a ticket from Cairo to Sydney. It may be intentional, it may just be website defects. I have never phoned Qantas to see if they will sell it over the phone....
