QF Dreamliner to fly MEL/SYD/BNE to HKG

Well for me it is Hip width of 17 inches and shoulders at 19.3 inches not a lot of room left and most consider me to be average build in shoulder and hip, but not in the tummy region LOL. Working on it. Hence why a 787 is an absolute no go for me in Y. And dare I say it for a significant number of my average friends :)

As I mentioned in a different thread, the realisation that the cabin width is the same for the -8 and -9 and therefore 3x3x3 is the exact product as JQ Y was enough to realise this "premium product" is not worth paying the premium for. I flew it earlier this week and the aisles felt more cramped than the 737s.

We sort of put up with shoulder to shoulder on a 1hr flight. Maybe even a 2hr flight. Anything longer and I don't see how I could cope. Perhaps there's some sort of magic in the 787 that makes it work?

And I believe it was before my time but
737's were first delivered as 5 across? Qantas had a chance to introduce a premium product with the 787s configured 2-4-2 but it chose to go with a high density configuration.

Exactly right. Why choose Qantas economy where the seat is narrow and is aisles are narrow just l like JQ, an LCC option which is expected to be tight. Sure the entertainment is better. But the food has gone downhill since they abandoned the trays. The 787 is not a premium experience for those in Economy and Premium Economy. Ill stick with the A330 and A380 to HKG thanks.

Re the article in the AFF Gazette... I agree with qantas! Business on the 787 is, indeed, a mini first class.

Actual first class on QF these days is so average, so ordinary, that it pretty much matches business class, save for upgraded champagne.

I’m not so sure this is the message Qantas wants to get across though?

re the article in the AFF gazette with Qantas claiming FF saying 787 Business is "mini first class" - if they are going to do marketing hype, at least don't make it laughably untrue.
Qantas' J product is more like "industrial business class" (especially on the A380).

I went right through to June next year in my GDS, which is Amadeus, the same that QF uses, and they are not selling any First Class on 787 flights to HKG. And Matt Grahams article is incorrect is one respect. Etihad have a First Class and they have The Apartment. They are separate classes/cabins on the A380, so First Class doesn't get a suite as he describes. Only The Apartment, at around 2-3 times the cost of First Class, gets all those trimmings.

"mini First Class". Seems the marketing department is getting a bit carried away. Suites with direct aisle access may be a step forward but it's definitely far short of First Class.
In their dreams. :). :). it barely passes as J in my estimation and I certainly won’t fly it again, as I found it quite uncomfortable. Still I suppose it s the job of the marketing department to spin it and the mugs to buy it. :) :).

Unfortunately, that's what we have come to expect from Qantas in recent years. Overhype the product and give us something as low as they think they can get away with. It has been a long time since QF has got anywhere near the best in anything that it does. (Even the hype is second best).

Flew the 787 this morning, Y looked super cramped. The aisles were tiny - no surprise given it was designed for 8 abreast. Went back and sat in row 59.. will prefer the 380 for Y until the upper deck disappears.
I had the same feeling. The aisles are SO tiny! I flew this weekend on PE and J, and saw so many bags getting stuck even when passengers were going through the PE section. Then walked down to Y and looked terrible. The configuration is the problem, but PE is not impressive at all either! The leg space in 747s and 380s are heaps better.

I don't think anyone has suggested QF is going to be selling F on the 787-9 aircraft to HKG. The reference to selling F on some flights to HKG during peak season from December (likely through to after CNY) implies the A380 will be operating some service to HKG, which I assume will be from SYD.

This will be a nightmare for OW elites who flies Y for personal travel.

CX's 777 Y soon will be 3-4-3 for Australia, so even the extra legroom seats are free, you will be squeezed from the sides.
Qantas A380's Y so far are the best in terms of width, SG or WP could pick extra legroom for free, now with the tiny 787 3-3-3 Y you will be squeezed from the sides too !

$6XX / 7XX return CX or QF ? may be I pay a bit extra for SQ Y....

Now HKG are in the 5XX 6XX range most of the time, all you need is second tier airlines to price their PEY for below $1,100 and the competition is on again ! for PEY... come on...

i think you are getting confused between “the Residence” and “the Apartments”. The standard F class on the Etihad A380 is the apartment and is as described in the article and is very competitively priced. The Residence is the expensive one and that is a 3 room suite.
