I know this has been posted before but can't find it?
Ihave booked Perth - Sydney return , the Perth flight I requested a upgrade to J, points ,and got it straight away, I requested syd-per QF577 on June 16 ,points , and it came up " not available/requested, where do I stand, and why " not available then Requested?

No U class availability.

Upgrades are not available on all flights. The way to determine availability in advance if you do not have access to ExpertFlyer is to try a dummy test for Business Award availability.

Never, ever book a whY flight from PER to the east or return without doing a little bit of homework in advance if you are seeking an upgrade ;).

So how did I get upgraded going over? If you say no upgrade on All flights?

I didn't say that.

There was obviously U class availability going over; not coming back. It's quite simple: available and you'll get it; not available and you won't.

To be clear: there MUST be U class availability. Upgrades do not materialise out of thin air.

A flight may show no U availability in advance but it could appear close to departure - depending on load. If you want to be SURE of an upgrade when booking, you MUST choose a flight with U available.

To further that, you absolutely can receive upgrades when there are none initially available. And I have done so many times, in fact this week I got a requested (non-immediate) upgrade on both PER-MEL and MEL-PER at T-24h or so.

Having said that, in my experience the weekend flights particularly those connecting with international schedules are more difficult to get requested upgrades on. Mid week flights not so bad (which might sound obvious but both sets of flights often fly full-ish; more higher status PAX and more actual booked biz seats on those routes I guess)

There are two ways to get domestic upgrades - either confirmed instantly at time of purchase (just do a dummy booking for a business class award seat to make sure it's available on your chosen flight on the Qantas website... no need for special tools), or if none are available immediately, join the waitlist 'on request'.
