Hi All and Merry Xmas,

I'm flying on the red eye from PER-MEL tonight (family on both sides of the country) and I'm interested in how seats are allocated.

My preference is window, and I always get it unless I ask for something else. I want to know how the system allocates seats to customers. If the flight is not full, does it automatically space people out so they have a vacant seat between them? Does it move FF's up front? Does it fill from front to back first, or back to front, or random etc etc...?

Can you also ask them if space is available to leave a spare seat next to you?

I was going to upgrade to J tonight but the flight looks pretty empty so I dont think its worth it..

Thanks

There are wise men on this board that can probably answer your question in greater detail than I, but seating allocation on domestic flights is done the night before the flight. Typically it will allocate the seats based on status (CL first, then Plat, gold, silver, bronze), allowing for groups travelling together and so on. Thus CL and plats will generally get there preference (forward aisle, rear window or whatever).

From what I have seen the effect of a lightly loaded plane depends on just how lightly loaded we are talking. They do seem to favour leaving the middle seat empty.

Generally, after take-off you are free to move somewhere with more space around if you like.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have preference for forward aisle and I have noticed on a lot of near empty domestic flights I get allocated aisle in the middle section somewhere. When getting on the plane most people seem to have been spaced out rather evenly. I think computer has a habit of doing this as much as possible and one check-in attendant mentioned this to me also.

Apart from that it really is a lottery but as oz_mark said the higher the status the better chance of getting your preference but also if plane is near empty and you are down the back you can move yourself closer to the front anyway.
