QF domestic delay experience when connecting to non-partner international flight

I'm planning to fly domestic MEL to BNE with QF, then VA internationally from BNE leaving 1pm.

Booking the 7:10am flight to BNE, gets me there at 9:20am - if things go smoothly I should have 3.5 hours to make the transfer in BNE. Is this enough or cutting it too fine?

I thought it would be ok until I heard of 3+ hour delays today and yesterday for many QF domestic flights.

In those circumstances would Qantas try to move people with international connections on to earlier flights if asked, even if the connecting flight was with another airline? Or is it futile unless with a partner carrier.

Only reason I'm thinking of flying QF instead of VA is for the eligible segment to re-qualify for status.

Am I crazy. Should I just book with VA?

QF has moved passengers to earlier flights when there have been weather disruptions, regardless if they have international connections. But you may not get priority particularly if it's not ticketed on the same booking... Better if you book with VA and leave the QF requalification segment to the return flight?

There was fog in BNE that morning and caused ~2 hour delay to my BNE-SYD that night.

You'll generally be ok with a 3.5h transit domestic to international in BNE but as mentioned probably best to stick to same carrier early in the morning.

If you are on separate tickets, you’ll be on your own. Just something to keep in mind.

QF would be FAR more inclined to help you out if you were connecting QF-QF than QF-VA !! lol

Strictly though, separate tickets... I agree. on your own if things go awry. Pretty unlikely on MEL-BNE tbh, but
you never know.. but just telling QF you have a 1pm international flight may mro may not elicit some help depending on the agent.

if one is really that worried why not just fly MEL-BNE on the last flight th enight before?
