QF Delayed Flights ex US Compensation

Hi all,

Can someone refer me to the relevant rules surrounding mandatory compensation for delayed flights departing the US?

More specifically, how do these apply to a QF flight travelling US - AU?

Pretty sure there isn't any mandatory compensation in the US, same as Australia. Are you perhaps thinking of the EU model?

Correct, as per the DOT guidelines here: https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/fly-rights

Their advice is that pax *may* be able to claim for delays under the Montreal Convention, but it's a fairly high bar to pass to be able to claim. The same 'protections' of Montreal theoretically apply for international flights out of Australia... I'm not sure if it's ever been successfully used. Otherwise the DOT suggests you go to small claims court.

A less drastic option would be to have travel insurance that covers delay losses

What is the OP being compensated for, a loss (missed flight connection, hotel accommodation, business meeting etc) or a mere delay (similar to being in road traffic)?
