QF confirms no firm 787 delivery dates

It should also be noted that QF was part of a group of airlines that helped define the specs for the 777. I do believe that they are they only airline from that group who never bought it. So the reason why they never bought something that was in part built specifically for them we'll probably never know.

'part of a group of airlines that helped define the specs' seems a long way removed from 'built specifically for them'. I wonder if QFs desired specs were different enough from the others' and what eventually was settled on that they decided not to buy.

If I ran an airline and was doing my best to keep costs down also I'd have the following 3 planes in the fleet:

738
332
and 773ERs.
Maybe some 388's but not sure they're needed. They do give the airline a great marketing tool but.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I have some related questions -

1. Does QF any firm dates yet?

2. With a few airlines taking 787 deliveries (including what I would consider less prominent airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines) why isn't QF at the front of the queue esp. since they initially ordered 65 aircraft (and have options for up to 110 IIRC) and have been moaning about fuel prices and QFi's lack of profitability and/or JQ could have an even lower cost base?

Thanks

I doubt QF have firm dates, even JAL has not got firm dates with a new route announcement overnight having a little clause about it being subject to aircraft delivery! As for QF being at the front of the queue, they are only the number 4 in terms of order size, and they were two years behind the first orders which came in 2004, even then they are jumping ahead of some 2004/5 operators!

Ethiopian Airlines got theirs before QF because they committed to the purchase ling before QF did.

I'm told Ethiopian is a quite prominent airline in Africa. One of my colleagues taking a ride ADD-JNB on the 787 in a couple of weeks time. Looking forward to his feedback. Cheers skip

Yep, and QF did not want to buy the earlier slots that became available that LAN snapped up!

LAN confirms plans to take early 787 delivery slots

The last I read it was still middle of 2013 for JQ's first 15 to start flowing, I think August was specifically mentioned but that might be for delivery not actual commercial flights, and then 2016 (!) for the next 35 which are to be split between JQ and QF, and Qantas hasn't said how many 787s each airline will get, probably because they don't know.

There was a rumour a few months ago that QF would take some of the first JQ 787s, which got a lot of people excited but turned out to be completely false, a shame really because you think that Qantas could rake in some excellent publicity and a rare 'good news' story by launching its own 787s on domestic routes, maybe also trans-tasman.
