QF Carry on limit when flying a codeshare on JQ domestic at the end of an international flight

Hi All

Was flying on JQ609 yesterday when a mother and adult son were refused carriage if 2 x 7kg bags each as carry on.

They claimed they had flown in from JNB presumably on QF64 and were told by QF agent their carry on allowance with QF would be honoured by JQ as it was QF codeshare and linked booking.

Gate agents refused and I tried to help explaining that general practice including QF was to allow the most generous baggage allowance on a transfer under the same booking.

Agents got angry with me, who was I etc. and in the end charged them for putting the luggage in the hold.

Tried to find on QF website and it now says “maybe allowed ” depending on onward carriers own baggage limits.

Any thoughts?

No reference to carry on limits for QF*JQ flights.

However "If your customers are travelling under a ‘QF’ flight number, the Qantas baggage allowance will apply."

Conceivably, Qantas baggage allowance comprises both Checked and Carryon luggage; therefore they should get Qantas' Carry-On baggage allowance.

The staff reaction I am not surprised at - you were usurping their authority while they were trying to bully customers by relying on said customers' lack of knowledge/experience.

The QF website clearly says “Qantas and Qantaslink operated flights” for the QF carry on allowance.

Flying JQ with a QF code means you get the QF checked allowance (but not the extra elite allowance). Carry on is always determined by the operator. (Try carrying on 23Kg when connecting from BA to QF).

I also find it hard believe QF told them what JQ would let them carry. QF and JQ love to say they are different airlines (especially when you ask about QFF points issues). I have asked QF before on a similar journey and they told me to contact Jetstar.

That seems reasonable however I do not see on the page I linked to such a statement.

There is nothing to contradict "Qantas Baggage Alliwnce will apply".

The whole issue of checked and carry on baggage when travelling on QF & JQ is an absolute minefield to navigate and probably just as hard for airline staff to get their head around it as it is for the passengers.

I think JQ were correct in that pax were only allowed 7 kilos total per person but I can totally understand pax point of view as they were mislead by the checkin staff in JNB who wrongly assumed that JQ would honour the QF carry on allowance as well as the checked allowance.

From the above link in Serfty's post it states if the customer is travelling on a Qantas marketed flight operated by Jetstar the Qantas checked baggage allowance applies however I don't think JQ609 SYD/AVV has a QF codeshare number so it seems likely the flight was sold as JQ609 ie JQ marketed flight even though it was probably on the same ticket as JNB/SYD on 081 ticket stock. It doesn't mention carry on allowances at all.


Assuming pax were booked JQ609 and thereby a 'JQ' service then the JQ checked baggage applies then it states that the carry on allowance is maximum 7 kilos only total not per item.


The above scenario would also describe the pax if they were on QF64/JQ609 and states that the checked baggage allowance depends on the marketing carrier and specific itinerary. It doesn't address carry on luggage at all as ticketed allowances are specifically for checked bags.


If the JQ609 was booked as a 'QF' flight number the QF baggage allowance will apply however it doesn't specifically state checked baggage or carry on however I think they mean checked only and once again the carry on allowance specifically is not addressed. Moot point if it wasn't a 'QF' flight number because the JQ cabin baggage allowance would apply.
