Hi All

Trying to plan my upcoming trip to the USA next year and have the choice of flying in either J class on QF or F class on United. Just wondering those that are more travelled than I am what their opinions are?? Flights will be SYD - LAX or JFK.

Thanks
Joe

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'd take F on United but I guess many people here will disagree. My reason is for the seat alone.

Joe what is the most important aspect of travel to you? Points, status , baggage??

What equipment are united using?

If its the united that I know I would run a country mile!!

I just flew UA First class from IAD-FCO on a 767 and can honestly say its the worst First class I've ever flown. The lack of professional service, the pathetic attempt at food and the old and tacky 'suites' are at best, substandard.

I'd take QF biz on A380 any day over United.

If J on t he A380 the seat is like an F seat of recent times so I would take QF mainly for the status credits and miles.

the equipment is a Boeing 747-400 and the F suite on UA is quite good and much more private than a QF A380 in business

Thanks Sprucegoose

Points and status earn are not important as I dont fly often enough to get and maintain status. This is for a special occasion and a treat.

Gold Member, flights will be on the 747 not a 767. Does that make a difference?

Thanks for the input
Regards
Joe

It may also depend on what equipment you will be on if you do go to NY. Domestic F with UA is average at best, but if you go QF Business on the QF107/108, at least the product will be consistent and you will have the Skybed and Business device throughout the journey.

UA have a superior F product on LAX-JFK than other domestic routes with angled lie flats and quite a good meal service

I have been pondering this dilemna for a leisure trip. I like the QF J product, and also enjoy the QF first lounges in both SYD and LAX, so have always stayed on QF J for this route. But am considering doing the United F version. Any comments from members on what lounges are available at each end if I do this?

Trying to find schedules and it seems that a connection on UA requires an overnight in LAX with the flight from SYD arriving at 1015am and the only UA flight to JFK leaving at 0819am or a long connection to EWR at 1010pm

Not as far as I know. Both 767 and 747 have the same 'updated' First suites (777s fleet still being updated). Check out some pics online, and maybe specs via seatexpert or seatguru.

My flight was only TATL so it was tolerable for 8 hrs, but if your looking at TPAC at 14-15hrs there's no doubt about it in my mind.

Ahmm, dunno where you are looking but the schedule is as follows:

And as for seats,

United First:

All have direct aisle access.

I know where I'd rather sit.

I haven't flown UA F for over 5 years, but have done so on several occasions SYD-SFO-SYD. Although aging slightly the seat (3A) was great, and the service by the very experienced FA's (meaning mature age) and the meals were really good. Apart from the Red Carpet Club at Sydney there was also a UA FLounge, albeit small, but more than adequate for the number of F pax on the UA flight. When you arrive at LAX you used to be able to use 'Arrivals by United' which provides you with the opportunity of a shower and have buffet breakfast etc before you next UA flight. I think this is only available if connecting with another UA flight. All in all, I was quite happy with the experience.

I have also flown QF F on the A380 several times, and that's a completely different story altogether, turns you into a real snob with Y pax only being on board for ballast.

QF A380 to LAX, then 744 to JFK. Kangaroo all the way – no American carriers, always the way to go.

that schedule makes more sense :D

For the last 5 hours do you get international F on the 757 or domestic F on the 757 with recliner seats?

Angled lie flat on united PS 3 class 757. Similar to Singapore airlines space beds they had on 747 s.

Its a much enhanced domestic f class. Its united PS... I think it stands for premium service

Joe I know you say points and status don't matter to you but now that QF is able to be used for AAdvantage Gold/Platinum challenge you could reach AA Platinum on the first QF leg, giving you Oneworld sapphire status and 100% bonus miles as AA Plat, for a couple of hundred bucks. With a few more carefully planned AA mileage purchases you could treat yourself again in the future for not too many $$$.
