I'm a little confused about baggage allowances at the moment.
I'm flying to SFO on QF on Sat, and coming back from LAX 10 days later. I plan to pick up some goodies in LA on the way home, but am confused about just what the allowances are.
I'm in cattle class, Bronze FF and Bronze QC member, but appear to have been upgraded to PE for the trip home from LAX.
Just to be on the safe side, I want to work on worst case scenario (cattle class) so I don't get caught coming home.

I know I can have 2 bags up to 23kg, but as a Qantas Club member it says on the website

"Qantas Club Extra 10 KGS or for the USA or Sth America regions, one extra piece"

So does that mean I get 3 bags to a max of 23kg or 3 bags to a max of 33kg (the extra 10kg) or 2 bags to a max of 33kg? Its not normally an issue, but with what I want to bring back on this trip, it gets important - otherwise I'll post some of it home.

Any insight from members greatly appreciated.

Just for the hell of it I tried calling QF and got straight through to Olivia! No waiting!
It seems I get 2 pieces up to 23kg, then 1 extra piece up to 23kg.
Woo hoo, now I bring it all home with me for free!!!!!!

yes, correct answer. You get 3 pieces (2 for being a Y passenger and one extra for being Qantas Club member). Each piece can be up to 23kg.

The trouble is, the weight limit for the additional piece allowance of QP, SG etc are NOT clearly listed on the web site.

Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club Members:*

  • Platinum Frequent Flyer members continue to receive one extra piece on the USA routes and an additional 15kg (33lb) allowance on all other routes.
  • Qantas Club members continue to receive one extra piece on the USA routes and an additional 10kg (22lb) allowance on all other routes.
  • Silver and Gold Frequent Flyer members continue to receive one extra piece on the USA routes and an additional 10kg (22lb) allowance on all other routes.
It may be inferred, but that is not definitive.

Take note too that the days of Qantas being slightly flexible with their checked bagagge allowances are gone, so make sure your bags don't exceed 23kg each.

I flew SYD-BNE on the final domestic leg of a trip to the US (which as QC allows 3 x 23kg). While checking in at the domestic Qantas Club counter my two bags weighed up at 34.5kg, well within my limit however 1.5kg over the standard domestic limit. Before it was realised I was on a USA ticket, the agent proceeded to advise the excess charges for the 1.5kg.

Not long ago a little over was ignored... but it seems money is a little tighter these days.

It would help enormously if Qantas could publish unambiguous info on this matter. For instance, I just picked up their brochure "Important changes to your checked baggage allowance", which contains the following two consecutive sentences:
"Customers travelling to/from USA/South America with Qantas will receive a new allowance of two pieces per person at 23kg per piece." Well, that seems clear enough, but then it is followed by this;
"Additional collection charges apply to any total baggage weight exceeding the 23kg allowance." To me, the word total seems to contradict the per piece advice in the previous sentence. I think they mean "Additional collection charges apply to any individual bag weighing in excess of 23kg", but, if so, why don't they say that?

When i was reading the current Australian Way magazine today on my flight in there was a section on luggage and it sounded to be worked correctly in there as we have discussed here. It spoke about the limit for each region and also an exact reference to the number of bags and limits of each bag making exact reference to the fact it is 2 x 23kgs for America's

Dang, can't locate my copy from last week - SWMBO may have disappeared it. :-|

The web sire is quite clear about baggage for non status customers, but the reference for transpacific is not clear for those with status based additional allowances.
