QF B747s operating for JQ SYD-HNL

Was also on the flight on 14/04 (OEG as well which was a welcome change!) - seemed to be a few spare seats in the business cabin (but couldn’t bag an upgrade from the lounge on the way out as I was only in economy!) Premium Economy was just the seats with Economy service, completely unsure how they allocated it (kind of interesting because I had paid for up the front seats with JQ).

As has been mentioned was full QF service with baggage included, and I was in 43C, being the first row of economy and was a very welcome change compared to JQ.

Excuse the shocking photo but full QF service as you can see and included free alcohol throughout the flight!

Just my 2 cents worth - the old QF 747 F is not great by todays standard and has not been sold as F for quite a few years however last time I few it (a couple of years back) the seat was still comfortable. The IFE was rubbish.

That meal looks disgusting... as if someone has eaten it once already... low grade slop. I hope it tasted better than it looks :)

It isn’t pretty that’s for sure - but actually wasn’t too bad to be honest! Was the Chipotle Chicken option out of the three on the menu! Breakfast looked a lot better! ;-)

The poster apologised for the poor pic and stated that there was free booze, so my interpretation is that meal was half eaten before the person realised they had not taken a picture. As for low grade slop, although the aircraft was QF it was still a LCC JQ flight. ;)

Son and partner who were rebooked on the Qantas service were very happy with the flight.

I got the inside word on this from a mate I know at JQ over the weekend.

Apparently the bird in question suffered a fuel contamination.

The QF charter is costing JQ $550k per return service.

Brettmcg, this cost equates to $820 for a one way trip per passenger (assuming every one of the JQ B788's seats were booked in each direction).

Expensive, but there's little alternative as it would be impossible to find 335 spare seats five days a week each way unless passengers were rerouted via indirect routes with a stopover (AKL and maybe even LAX - impractical). The cost to JQ of doing the latter might well be even higher.

JQ B788 VH-VKJ remains in Osaka as far as I can see.

moa999, I didn't know how fuel tanks could be cleaned out, but this may be of minor help:

How are fuel tanks cleaned out?

The lack of information as to when VH-VKJ may be again carrying passengers continues. It's close to 3.5 weeks since it was in revenue service.

May be waiting for investigators to release the aircraft...

The NTSB appointed a representative to the investigation a few days ago.

The Japanese are notorious for this. A friend of mine was involved in an investigation up there, and they thought he should stay in the country for however long it took (well over a year). If you have a problem with an aircraft, and a choice of Japan, or anywhere else to land, take anywhere else.

I got the fare a little cheaper than $820? But regardless, it’s possible QF is putting freight onto the plane to offset the costs.

thanks for the report! Any details you observed about other economy passengers seated in business seats? or premium economy seats?

didnt observe much im afraid. i was jsut stoked to be off the jetstar flight to be honest.
