QF Award - correct points charged?

Probably a very silly question I know, but have never made a similar booking before, so am yet to come across this....

Needed to get from PER to BNE using points in J.

No seats available on direct flights, so the system offers my a connection in MEL in both directions.

Am fine with this. However, rather than the 72k points I was expecting it to cost, it priced out at 100k.

Is this normal? It's not like I'm making using of the connection in MEL with a stopover or anything.....

Can you use points plus pay, if you don't have the 100,000 points?
Not that I have face the same as in your case, but flying via MEL, yes, I would expect it to be more expensive, points usage wise.
Hopefully at the least you get an Airbus330 from PER to MEL both ways.
I have done 4 hours in J on a Jetconnect 737, and in also Y, ouchie for the one in Y!

Classic awards are priced per trip, a trip being per flight.

In a word, "Yes". Priced by sector (flight) not final destination.

Do not advise points plus pay - not worth it IMO as you end up paying way more when considering the cash component and number of points.

Which is fine when you want a stop over, but not so if QF are not offering the direct service.

Classic awards are priced per trip, a trip being per flight.

A trip is not necessarily a single flight - it can be a series of flights unbroken by stopovers, change of carrier or class etc. as per: (Frequent Flyer - Discover and Join - Terms and Conditions - Definitions)

Definition of "Trip" with effect from 1 September 2013
Note: The above definition of "Trip" will be effective until 31 August 2013. Please see below for the new definition of "Trip" that will be effective from 1 September 2013.
"Trip" means a series of one or more consecutive Flight Segments within an Itinerary:
(a) that does not include:
(i) a Stopover; or
(ii) a Flight Segment whose arrival city is the same as the departure city of any other Flight Segment in that series (in this instance the Trip will be broken at the farthest point from the departure city for that series);
(b) not exceeding the maximum permitted miles in the Qantas, Jetstar or Partner Classic Award tables as applicable (see qantas.com for the tables); and
(c) not broken by a change to or from any airline included in the Partner Classic Award table (see qantas.com for the table).

Classic awards are based on the trip distance which is the sum of the segment distances (the make up that trip).

In this case the trip distance for PER-xMEL-BNE (1681+857=2538) is over 2400 miles while PER-BNE is under 2400 miles (2246), so Zone 4 v. Zone 3.

Frequent Flyer - Flying Qantas & Partner Airlines - Flying with Qantas & Jetstar - Using Qantas Points

Zone 3 is 36K one-way in business, Zone 4 is 50K one-way in business - double for a return.

FWIW, PER-xADL-BNE route comes in at under 2400 miles, so zone 3.

Thanks for the added info/clarity Serfty.

Have just checked what VA have available on same day (sorry for raising here - I know this is in the QF area, but didn't want to start a new thread just for this question), and they are showing J available on a direct flight - means 2 hours extra in bed and not having to connect in MEL.

However, it's on a 73H, which I have not flown before with them.

Any views on whether VA J on 73H versus the QF J which is on one of the A332s with the middle 'work area' thing.....?
