Hi everyone,

No specific question but i'm interested in people thoughts. Being in Adelaide we are (gradually) getting a much broader selection of ways to get out of Australia. What I find interesting is that QF don't seem interested in being part of this. with only 4 direct flights to Singapore each week (with unhelpful arrival times) they never really had much presence here anyway but I read the other day it'll be likely these flights will start going via Darwin to increase pax. Here's the thing though: SG are upping their services to (i think) 12 direct flights weekly, CX are starting a direct service and EK are going to be bring in a 3 class (including F) service direct to Dubai (which will i'm guessing be code shared with QF). Perhaps the EK push into Adelaide was part of a broader strategy alongside QF but even so it feels like QF are missing an opportunity. Why is it QF can't (or don't want to) profit from providing a decent service into asia? SG, EK and CX by their commitment to Adelaide are suggesting it can be done. Personally (at least when paying $) I fly Y and I can't find much difference between the 3 carriers so QF would get my pick if only they had daily direct flights. I've noticed rumors that QFi might pull out of perth too? It seems so strange the "national" carrier can only have success from the eastern capitals.

Cheers guys

because Adelaide is a small town...
QF can only fly ADL-SIN and then has to offload to other airlines (who take their cut), or to 3K (Jetstar Asia)

The other airline SQ, MH, CX fly to their hub and distribute.

The flights used to go via DRW, I suspect the QF flights will go, with the possible exception of a direct AKL. which might be operated by EK anyway.

Moa999 I do hope that first comment was in jest, seriously though isn't the comment about connections simply an indication that QF aren't doing it right? Plenty of other QF flights go via SIN out of the east coast. If the ADL/SIN flight was timed right it could feed into them (yes I know the EK tie up will change a lot of this anyway). Isn't SIN kinda a hub for QF anywayz (well was, it's hard to mount this argument now with the EK thing happening in the background!)

The numbers for Adelaide just dont work, on average its 385 passengers a day to SIN, spread across JQ/SQ and QF!

It's kinda like saying "i'm going to make a coughpy tasting beer" then when no one buys it suggest there's no reason to improve it because the numbers don't justify it. It'd be interesting to see what would happen if QF offered a better service, did SG just get in first with their increase in services and stole the market?

I thought the idea was that if its not SYD then it's not important.

Hopefully the EK partnership will free up QF to look at routes they can profit on, instead of being stuck with routes and timings they can't.

QF81/82 are timed to connect in SIN to flights to Europe. That's why the timing is currently rubbish. With the EK tie up, I'd like to think those timings will change, certainly Qantas have hinted that timings into Asia will be reviewed and changed to make them better for getting to Asia. I'm not sure about cutting ADL-SIN route - I really don't know the logistical facts involved. I've taken QF81/82 ADLSYD vv recently and the back of the aircraft looked pretty full. Maybe it is the domestic leg that's losing money. :?:

But I do agree that it would be much better to have daily flights ADL to Asia.

I'm not sure if there is any benefit for EK to do ADL-AKL. AirNZ currently have an A320 on the route. Doesn't suggest much demand to me.

First comment was in jest.

I think the question for QF is can they make the timings work to have multiple feeder services working once Asian services no longer are a feeder to LHR.

eg. have flights from PER, ADL, MEL, SYD, BNE all arrive in SIN at 1800ish (versus the current 2200ish - meaning a lunchtime departure for most ports)
Have each of these five planes on fly to BOM, KUL, BKK, TPE, MNL (for example) with pax transferring between each plane.

Big question will be whether QF could get these rights, particularly with the freedoms to pick up new passengers.

Every time I am in ADL and the SQ afternoon B777 flight is leaving, there always seem to be heaps of people around - so from what I see SQ is certainly happy with ADL at the moment, and I suspect quite a few ADL people as well.

Why fly direct when you can connect ;) I feel sorry for SYD people who get stuck on direct flights!
Which SYD people? Most of my international flights involve at least one connection. ;)

How about my latest trip. Started off as BNE-SYD-HKG-TPE-HKG-MNL-HKG-BKK and is now ending with BKK-SIN-HKG-MNL-BKK-SIN-SYD. :p

When I grow up, I wanna be like you. Except the golf. Hate golf.

I'd just like priority boarding and dedicated security lanes in ADL
