Hi everyone,

My partner and I are likely to be moving to Qatar in the next few months and we are trying to work out how to deal with our flights to and around the region.

Melanie is QF Gold and I have AA Platinum, and we feel it is best to try and maintain those levels, rather than jump ship to a Middle East based carrier, e.g. Emirates. What are your thoughts on this please? Our reading suggests that Qatar Airlines' FF scheme isn't too appealing.

I'm aware of the QF codeshare Etihad flights and we don't mind a few hundred extra dollars to have a QF flight number, as that means Melanie gets the points and I think that AA would allow me to credit to AA?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers, Andrew

See here for information about earning on AAdvantage with other airlines.

American Airlines AAdvantage Participant Airlines

As for Qantas flight numbers, see here:

Qantas Airways

Note the following:
... Flight mileage may not accrue on flights operated by carriers other than oneworld carriers.

This does not mean mileage WILL not accrue on Qantas codeshares on Etihad metal, it means mileage MIGHT not accrue.

As for earning with Qantas Frequent Flyer, aside from JQ metal*, if it's a QF flight number then earnings are as for any Qantas flight - regardless of the operating carrier.

Airline Earning Table

*Excluded: Points and Status Credits are not earned on Qantas codeshare flights (ie flights with a QF flight number) operated by Jetstar other than in Economy classes of B, H, K or Y.

Andrew it will be dictated when you need to fly. Be careful of the middle eastern airlines though, none of them are in the major alliances and as serfty as pointed out 'might' is not an entitlement.

What airlines fly into QATAR and the other possibility is getting to DBX then switching?

Will the QF Gold member be able to complete the requirement for four QF flights during the membership year? AA does not currently enforce this requirement.

The Emirates FF program can be very attractive when it comes to earn/burn rates, and they offer excellent premium cabin experiences.

Unfortunately QF codeshares on Etihad will not give you AA miles.Gulf Air would earn you AA miles but Zip on QF.So there is a problem.
QF are also strict on the 4 QF sectors for status,AA certainly have been less so-will they in the future?
BA and RJ would be the only carriers out of Qatar I think where you would earn on both programs.CX do operate out of Bahrain ?close.

I hope not. By tomorrow lunch time I will have passed the 100,000 EQP requirement for EXP without setting foot/butt on an AA flight (codeshare or metal). All QF, CX and JL with a single award segment on BA.

Many thanks for your advice.

For European/ Far East trips, I think we will be able to preserve our OW status via BA. Due to the AA/Etihad issue, we'll need to carefully think about how to deal with any trips back to Australia. As you mentioned, the four QF flights per membership year could be an issue but I think we can get around this.

I am tempted to start from scratch with Emirates as they have brilliant European links (for us at least) and serve Australia well. However, the line of work I do means it has heavy US leaning and I think North America is far from an Emirates strength.

Anyway, I've got the Great Australian Run in the morning so I think I should get some rest!

Thanks for your help.

Emirates's scheme could work well ; EK may not have many US destinations but they do allow mileage earning when travelling on UA
