I spend a fair amount of time doing red eye flights around Asia. For Qantas legs, that would be NRT-SYD, SYD-NRT, HKG-SYD, SYD-HKG, and SIN-SYD. I typically head out from meetings in one country and in to meetings the next morning in another. The amount of rest time on a flight is pretty important, and the reason that I fly in J for these sectors. I have flown in A332, A333, and B744 on these trips, and always had a continental breakfast served irrespective of type in the last few years.
I actually did QF6 last night. We had a fast flight time, and it was a full flight, so meal services take longer. if you look at this from a body clock point of view, the dinner service started at 8:30pm and ran for almost an hour. To fit the breakfast service in before landing, it started at 1:50am (Singapore time). We landed right at 5am Sydney time.
A hot breakfast on the ground is always going to taste better, especially if I have had a few hours of rest. I would actually prefer an arrival lounge so I could shower and have something proper to eat.
I will also add, that looking around the typical J cabin, none of the passengers seem undernourished. (myself included)
