QF 717's

Evening all,

On Friday I had a day trip PER-BME-PER.

PER-BME was on a QF 737-800.

BME-PER was on a QF 717.

A huge difference which I cannot understand why it has taken me so long to notice is the massive difference in pitch between the two aircraft. Plenty more room on the 717 compared to the 738!

I have traveled on QF 717's plenty of times in the past but this was the first time I noticed it (I was in 3F if that makes a difference).

Future trips to KGI and BME will most definitely be on the 717 (with ipad in tow though as no IFE)!

I had 2-3 sectors on the 717 a few years ago and I was very impressed with the pitch as well.

I have grown to hate the 737's for my weekly domestic commutes and I try and choose 767's where ever possible but then QF substitutes the 767 for a 737 anyway.

Enough times for it to be a concern. And now with selecting seats at time of booking I end up in row 25, 26 on a 737 often unless I check my bookings regularly. From now on I will choose a JK seat on a 767 as that does not have a 737 equivalent and the computer will be forced to re-allocate a seat for me on the 737 instead of transposing my selection on the 767 directly onto the seat map of the 737.

On Friday night BNE-SYD on a relatively empty flight I was in row 4 (there were only 3 business class passengers) and I was at the luggage carousel a few minutes before the next person turned up. Only problem was my business class priority tagged luggage was 53rd bag (yes I do get bored easily) to come out.

From my experience you do not want to be any further back than row 6-7 if you have luggage to collect and have someone coming to pick you up late at night who does not possess a mobile phone.

I remember one time in row 7-8 on a SYD-BNE flight where I ended up waiting for a person in front to disembark and when we finally got out the passengers from the first couple of rows were 100 or so metres in front and then the others behind come out like Brown's cows.

One of the main reasons I want to be in the first couple of rows of economy on every flight.

If your bag was 53rd to come off the carousel it sounds like even the browns cows or last pax off the plane would've been at the carousel by then.

I thought you only took checked luggage unless you had mum's cooking as cargo? Maybe if someone with no mobile is picking you up just take carry on &as it would appear it's just tempting fate for your bag to take its time.

WRT to changes in a/c from 767 to 737 & direct transposing of seats numbers. Wonder what would happen if you pre-allocated yourself 30J on a 767 as no equivalent seat on a 737? Or as you said just choose a J or K seat that n'existez pas on a 737.

Couldn't agree with you more. The exit rows 14&15 on the 717 have masses more room also vs the 738.

The last thing I want to do after any flight is to be standing (or sitting) waiting for Brown's cows to get off.

Also note that priority luggage on domestic flights simply does not work.

Checked luggage at all times. I try to avoid taking a laptop bag and a carry-on bag with me inside a cabin. Too much hassle looking for space for both or be one of the first on which I hate.

The computer is smart enough to re-allocate a seat if the seat no longer exists on substituted aircraft. I have pre-allocated row 25 on a 767-338 and the computer has re-allocated row 26 if the aircraft has been substituted by a 767-336.

John I have never tried counting bags before mine on the carousel.
That is cheaper than fishing out a one or two dollar coin and putting that on the carousel once 30 minutes of wait time has elapsed.
The record has been 4 times around before a child grabs the coin!

My main reason for forward seat is to beat the rental car queue, particularly the holiday crowd that hasn't booked ahead and wants to look at the whole vehicle range for suitability!!:evil:

Hey Groundfeeder, if you want to avoid the crowds of rental car perusers, I suggest that you join up as a member of your favourite rental agency. Usually you get to completely avoid the queue and just head straight for your allocated vehicle with all the paperwork in the car ready to go. No hassles, and you're on the road before you can say "see you later suckers" to everybody waiting in line!

A bit OT.. but had a flight the other day, boarding the pax, plane was downgraded to a 737 from a 767 (and this was a late change, the day of I believe), plenty of pax came along with boarding passes for rows >30 ... and of course it rejected, and having to reprint a lot of boarding passes. As has been said, if there seat number you select eg (23-29A,C,D,E,F) is on both a/c it remains the same I believe.

I had one WP come along, pre-allocated 29A (when he thought it was a 767). I told him that 29A was now a window seat in the LAST row, and told him to go to the service desk. The flight was absolute chockers, and I don't think there was anything close to the front. Lo and behold a J Class pax was a no-show, and he was slotted into 1A. Very lucky for him

... or 25[anything] on a 763 ... you may get a late sub to a 763 configuration with NO row 25 ... especially on the Golden Triangle ...

I have private membership with most of the major renters but the bulk of my rentals are paid by QLD Govt which won't allow FF points etc. Mind you we get great deals and always upgraded to flash SV6's and Calais due to my constant rentals. If they only knew where these cars go ...
