Not every airline charges a fee to select a seat.
Disappointing that Qantas charges and it used to be $20 for normal seat and $80 for exit row and then increased to $25 for normal seat and $90 for exit row. They needed to boost some of the obscene executive bonuses in what are very tough times for a struggling airline.
FWIW if I had no status I would happily pay $25 to avoid the possibility of a middle seat. In saying that though keep in mind that Qantas loads to Asia for now are very light so could easily get a decent seat at check-in at T-24 hours. Can back last night on an almost empty QF52.
