QANTAS's domestic sale(s)

This hasn't turned out as pretty as I was hoping, but thought I'd share some results here in case this was of interest..
I can sort of see what you are trying to represent. That's a lot of sales.

IS it possible to represent the data with a fixed point showing the relative days. Ie, adjust so that all sales are announced on Day 0, then indicate the sale length, then the travel days relevant to the original sales announcement. I'm thinking this might give us some indication of what type of sales to expect.

Not really, as you'd lose the perspective of the different travel periods throughout the year, e.g. October to December, before Christmas holidays, versus December to January, versus January to March.

From the diagram, you can see that October to December last year (the chart starts at April, so while you can't read the month names, you can count the months across the top), there were 13 sale periods, including a sale in the last week/fortnight before that period. (It's the 3rd major column in the diagram). Whereas for the December/Jan/Feb period, there were only 7 sales for that period.

As I indicate in the original post, I can't show the value of the sales, but I can certainly tell you that, in general, the earlier sales have the best specials (as you'd expect, I guess), but not always. What you might be able to determine, over time with statistical analysis, is when sales occur for a particular travel period throughout the year, and which sale cycle might have the best price.

Here's a sample of the input data for that October-December period.

Those figures would suggest that $99 this early for SYD-BNE/MEL is too expensive.

I'll wait for the real sale.

Unfortunately JohnK, the trend is now showing that the price on Sales is actually increasing: $99 may be the new low price in the sale cycle...

I don't think you'll be getting cheaper than $99 for MEL-SYD anymore

MEL-CBR used to be $89 on sale, then $99, then $109 and now $115 is the sale fare

$89 was last year, and $99 was this year, but $115 is the new sale :(

You might be right.

I think it is worth risking $10/flight to find out? If worse comes to worse I will fly OOL-SYD and vv on Virgin between October and December.

The scary part is this year April schol holiday period had sales from previous October but no sales for July, September-October and December-January school holiday periods this year.

I booked 48 flights BNE-SYD/SYD-BNE from Jan 16 this year to December 24. All for $99 each way. The only prices I have seen at $89 are the ones leaving form the international terminals sometimes. $99 seems teh be the standard fare for BNE-SYD.

I need to check again but most of my flights SYD-BNE and vv this year are at $85 an $89 through to September.

I suspect QF may have decided that trying to lose more than VA actually isn't good business.

Agreed and I wonder if VA regret basically selling themselves to 3 foreign companies, being forced to take on board members, losing their independence etc, wonder if it was worth it.... Time will tell!

The latest sale was due to end 28 July 2014?

Just over an hour ago at ~11:00pm I went to book a SYD-MEL flight for AFF gathering in MEL and the specials were not there.

Has someone pulled the trigger early?

Just missed the last QF sale and need to book a heap of fares over Dec and then Jan-April

Fingers crossed for a sale soon

Sale on now until Monday 13 October for Jan-Mar 2015.

Doesn't look too flash. SYD-BNE $99 and SYD-MEL $109 which coincidentally is the same as SYD-ADL.

Can't get too excited but QF is having a "New Horizons" sale both domestically and internationally. Ends 03 Feb (unless sold out sooner)

Last week PER-SYD was $315 - 235 in the sale.

Happy wandering

Fred

The Sky's the limit sale has been on the past few days. I went to book some flights for October/November today and the sale is over.

Sale ends 23.59 (AEST) 18 May 2015, unless sold out prior.

I am really confused! Is it still the 18th May 2015? And before midnight?

Qantas must have turned it all around and does not need any forward bookings.

I think 'unless sold out prior' is probably the key statement there.....

I thought of that as well but I would be extremely surprised if all sale seats on a all routes sold out early.

Very disappointing.
