Christmas Island and Cocos Keeling Islands are external territories. They are duty free (or low taxed) and subject to international security screening and bio security. Well worth a visit.

I don’t know. It’s very surprising that you have to deal with your own luggage during a terminal change when all on same ticket and outbound.

Maybe as a Senior I should ask Perth Airport about assistance with my wandering.

There is a landside transfer bus between between the two terminal areas.

I don’t know. It’s very surprising that you have to deal with your own luggage during a terminal change when all on same ticket and outbound.

Is it when QF will transfer your baggage to other T1 airlines, EK for example (on a single ticket of course)

Yep should have remained with VA. Also the hand baggage allowance on the route gets reduced to 8kg.

Taking the QFF extra allowance away as well!

I know this also applies on dash services but in principal I’ve never not been allowed to go over on those routes

“For bookings made or for existing bookings changed on or after 1 October 2026, an updated checked and additional baggage allowance will apply. These limits also apply to all Qantas Frequent Flyers, Qantas Club and oneworld members.

For bookings made or for existing bookings changed on or after 1 October 2026

Updated baggage allowance apply:

• One piece up to 23kg (50lb) per person
• One additional piece up to 23kg (50lb) per person, only available for purchase on arrival at the airport

Limits apply to all Qantas Frequent Flyers, Qantas Club and oneworld members, regardless of status.“

So maybe (?) silver QFFs and QC are SOL and possibly it had a 30kg limit before (?more than QF standard 23kg limit??) but otherwise ops fairly normal for other QFFs?

Terrible comms from Qantas - the locals saying they rely on extra baggage for nappies and baby formula, and the Qantas spokesperson saying that the locals should be happy to support the 'opportunities from the additional tourism'. Doesn't pass the PR pub test.

But ultimately it all relies on subsidies. Tourism will never pay the way, so the locals are reliant on government to negotiate outcomes for them.

As per article everyone had a 30kg allowance and could add extra very cheaply.

Seems it meant weight restrictions for the sector meant often luggage and freight got left behind and some reduction in available seats.

This situation was the subject of much compliant and demand for changes.

Seems QF is damned of they do, damned if they don’t.

The flight outbound from Perth originally for QF, routed via Port Hedland. Simply, now it's not doing that but going on to the Cocos....so.hence no doubt an issue and QF as usual, try and blame it on everyone else except themselves or bring up
some PR nonsense . They have changed the outbound route. The inbound also goes via Cocos but ironically has two different flights numbers.....bet you still don't get two lots of status credits though even though it's actually two different flights!

Like many of the remote island destinations QF serves, cocos / Christmas is very limited by accommodation so I don’t quite see the argument of extra tourism by limiting freight - I guess it depends how weight limited the flights are going out.

When I used to help process the Ansett/TAA B727flights that were on that route in the 1970's/80's I can't recall any real problems with fuel loads. I wonder if they had a better range or were seats blocked.

The islands were in the Australian immigration zone but subject to Customs processing

When we went to Cocos / Xmas Isalnds in 2016, I was impressed by how much fresh food and veges / fruits the locals brought back with them in their checked luggage.

The fresh veges section in the small shop on West Island was rather sad as it had been ages since the last supply ship had come.

We had a self contained apartment and we had mainly food with an esky in the 2 suitcases we brought

I was surprised that our food remained frozen despite our Syd-Per-Xch-Cck journey!

Direct as far as I can remember. The Christmas Island Airport was opened in 1974 and was initially served by TAA. Under the good old 'Two Airline Policy' Ansett soon shared the route.

Just prior to.the double status points end date...we have decided as a party of three to.do.this route for three nights. Found accomodation which looks fine and car. Sensing we should take out own food (and wine??). Plumped for June next year as a window of opportunity. A new adventure by the sounds of things . ...

Don’t take alcohol unless you want something unusual. The island is duty free and the supermarket has a good range at way better than airport prices.
