This is the first time on this flight.

What’s the situation with seat selection - I wasn’t able to do it from MMB. Do we ask at checkin. Are there any exit rows?

Thanks for any tips.

@AIRwin took this flight recently.

As this is a Dash 8 Q400 flight, generally seat selection opens up at online check-in (24 hours before departure). If you have status with QF, you'll often be allocated a good seat at the front of the plane automatically (and with a shadow, if the flight isn't full). Everyone else typically has access to rows 6 and beyond.

There are exit rows in 1A/B and 2C/D. The best seat is 1B, although this is directly opposite the FA. These seats are generally allocated to people with higher status though.

I am guessing you are going for recreational purposes and have no great need for a speedy path at PPP. Even on a full plane you are not going to notice much difference & there is very little variation in the seats on such a short flight

Yes for a holiday.

I like to sit as close to the front as possible. Guess I just got used to turning left! Most of our travels over many years has been international.

Just to add another question for this one, MMB says only 1x20kg checked bag allowed. I was planning on checking a bag and an oversize item (fishing rods). I'm a gold, does the increased status not apply to Dash 8s if not part of an international connecting flight?

Often if you get a seat at the front (priority goes to those with status), every other seat is blocked for weight & balance.

I always know if it's happened to me as my preference is aisle, but if I get allocated 2A I know that 2B will be free.

Until recently Q400s were the only red tails we got here in NTL, now we have three different aircraft so I don't tend to fly on them much anymore. If you get the after 4pm flight with alcohol service they pour wine from full sized bottles and keep topping you up through the flight - better service than mainline IMO.

The bus at BNE is a bit of a drag though.

I've done it plenty of times. It's not really an issue on Q400s.

Thanks, that's reassuring!

I might attempt to put everything in a cabin-sized bag anyway, just in case .... but unlikely to stay below 7kg given how many bikinis and toys I'm planning on taking 😆

You won’t be able to take a large cabin bag on a Dash 8 anyway. They will make it premium hand luggage and take it from you at boarding, load it into the hold and when you arrive it will be unloaded and given back to you on the tarmac. You can then go inside and collect you checked baggage if you had any. So be sure you don’t put things like your wallet or computer in a large hand bag or you will end up separated from it.

Yup I'm used to taking advantage of the premium hand luggage ;) Have done the QLD milk run toooooo many times.
